Job Summary
The Stream Crew internship program has been happening every summer for the last 23 years and is a great summer work opportunity (late June-September) for current college students enrolled in an environmental science or natural sciences program. If selected, you will gain real-world field experience that will better prepare you for careers in environmental and natural resource management!

As a Stream Crew member, you will walk Salem's urban waterways (streams, ditches and occasionally, wetlands) to remove trash, debris, and invasive plants that restrict conveyance and impact water quality. You will also use the Collector for ArcGIS application as well as other ESRI field applications to record stream inspections and document environmental conditions. This is physically demanding work; performed outdoors in hot, sunny, humid, and wet conditions. To carry out your duties, you will be required to use machetes, chain saws, loppers, and power tools to cut and remove brush, invasive plants, and trash from streams. You will have the opportunity to work in small groups and will report directly to the Stream Crew Environmental Aide. At the end of the internship, you will present to city staff and the general public on the highlights and accomplishments of your summer.

Typical duties for the Stream Crew include:
  • Removing trash and woody debris from urban streams in a safe manner following established safety protocols.
  • Collecting GPS field data (invasive species, erosion features etc) using a smart phone/collection device.
  • Use hand and power tools, including machetes, pruning saws, shovels, rakes, hedge or brush trimmers, and chain saws.
  • Mechanical/manual removal of invasive species from stream banks and wetlands.
The Public Works Department values employees and their professional development. If you are someone that takes pride in collaborating on innovative ideas, proactively responding to community needs, and being a good environmental and financial steward, we look forward to meeting you! The Public Works Department promotes a healthy work life balance, while maintaining the utmost dedication to the health, safety and welfare of our community, including our team!
