About the position

The Economic Opportunities Program (EOP) is a policy program at the Aspen Institute that advances promising strategies and policies to help low- and moderate-income Americans thrive in today's economy. Within EOP, the Business Ownership Initiative (BOI) engages community-based practitioners, financial institutions, funders, investors and policymakers to advance equitable access to business ownership and the resources necessary to start and grow businesses. We use research and evaluation, experiential learning, systems thinking and collaboration to build practices and policies that enable more equitable ownership opportunities

  • Cares deeply about disrupting the growing income inequality in our country and the impact this is having upon low-income communities and people, particularly people of color.
  • Believes systems hold problems in place and are responsible for the outcomes we see today, and are motivated to influence institutions to change their internal practices and systems
  • Enjoys fostering community and collaboration amongst organizations who in some circumstances, see each other as competitors
  • Has deep knowledge and experience in community development, entrepreneurial development and/or financial services and lending.

About this Role

Our ideal Senior Project Manager loves designing and facilitating innovative learning experiences that shift both beliefs and behaviors. They also love analyzing trends and practices in small business lending and development and creating communications content to share knowledge with key stakeholders.

The Senior Project Manager will focus on collaborating with small and microbusiness practitioners and funders and building their capacity to increase the scale and impact of their work.

Responsibilities

  • Design and facilitate peer learning events between micro and small business practitioners to improve their practice
  • Manage a multi-organization learning and/or research project, engaging with local implementers as well as funders and other experts to ensure that all parties understand the goals of the work and the work remains on track in terms of deliverables and timing. Collaborate with senior EOP staff around direction-setting, goals and methodologies.
  • Collect and codify learnings from peer learning and develop publications, blogs, webinars, presentations and other content to share these lessons broadly with stakeholders
  • Research, develop, and codify tools and resources to be shared with the micro and small business field
  • Contribute to broader initiative knowledge development through blogging, and authoring case studies; grant writing and reporting; and sensing of new micro and small business lending and support trends.
  • Represent BOI and EOP at professional conferences and other events.

Qualifications

  • Strong facilitation and communication skills; prior facilitation, evaluation and research and public speaking experience a plus
  • Strong analytic and writing skills; experience in deriving insights and lessons from varying qualitative and quantitative sources and communicating them in writing a plus
  • Experience engaging practitioners to shift mindsets and/or practices
  • At least five years of experience in a fast-paced, high-performing environment in any one of the following industries: community development, small business lending or financial services, entrepreneurial development, consulting, or philanthropy (we do not expect any candidate to have experience in all of these industries; if you only have experience in one of these sectors, please apply!)
  • Experience with and knowledge of one or more of the following: small business lending, small business coaching or consulting, community development (again, if you only have knowledge in one of these areas, please apply)
  • Experience supporting populations often challenged to access resources to start, grow and own businesses (e.g. people of color, women, immigrants, individuals with disabilities, refugees, system-involved, etc.)
  • Experience applying equity and inclusion principles (e.g. disaggregating data, addressing disparities between populations, identifying targeted strategies based on varying assets/needs, etc.)
  • Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and the willingness to take initiative to get the job done
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-up
  • Experience with systems thinking, human-centered design and/or improv is a bonus
  • Ability to travel domestically 15% to 25% of the time
  • Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint

This is a full-time, exempt position based in our Washington, D.C. office. We value the safety of our staff.
