Summary/Purpose: The Maintenance and Fleet Operations Manager is responsible for the continued operation and maintenance of systems, and equipment at ARLSS program sites (Kangerlussuaq, Raven, Summit Station, Thule AB, GrIT, Toolik FS, Barrow, and Fairbanks). Systems consist of but are not limited to; vehicle and snowmobile fleets, heavy equipment, power systems (both generators and renewables), fire suppression systems, and certain utilities. The Maintenance and Fleet Manager will be a key member of the PFS Management team, and a successful candidate will be experienced and capable in oversight of high-quality equipment maintenance, fleet maintenance management, fuel system operations , building maintenance& team leadership. The positions objective is to ensure a maximization of fleet/equipment and station equipment availability to correspond w/ ARLSS operations. It is a 40-hour position based at the PFS office in Littleton, CO with work-from-home/telecommute flexibility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for oversite of the Computerized Maintenance Management system (CMMS), to include training of lead personnel to oversee all location-based maintenance.
  • Effectively track & report data used to measure maintenance key performance indicators on the ARLSS fleet and systems. Including CMMS reporting, lifecycle replacement and long-range planning.
  • Responsible for cost and schedule management, to include annual budget preparation and reporting. Reporting requirements include annual emissions, quarterly OMB, monthly reporting, P6 schedule inputs/updates and weekly sitrep reports.
  • Lead point of contact for new and replacement fleet/systems. Includes gathering requirements from stakeholders, providing specifications of fleet requirements, developing white papers for client review, participating in inspections, acceptance and sign-off. Confirm receipt of equipment, warranties, and manuals.
  • Develop recommendations for future vehicles, equipment and personnel needs based on future projections of business and equipment changes.
  • Develops SOPs to maintain continuity of maintenance within the program.
  • Provide input and information for annual CPS End of Season.
  • Participate in annual program plan review.
  • Develop Change Requests (CRs) as required.
  • Oversee disposal of all government equipment.
  • Assist Greenland and Alaska Lead Maintenance Technicians as required
  • Recruit, hire, and supervise full time maintenance team members, Greenland Maintenance Lead, Alaska Maintenance Lead, Fleet Operations Supervisor, CMMS Coordinator, and pool of full-time Maintenance Technicians.
  • Ensure technicians are trained on current operating procedures, are properly equipped, and are motivated so that the maintenance program can be accomplished in a safe, timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Adheres to Health, Safety and Environment policies in planning and execution of activities
  • Purchase HSE equipment and PPE supplies for department.
  • Ensure all employees are trained on safety procedures and specialty equipment. Keep records of all such training as required by policy.
  • Generate and prioritize full time staff tasking and schedules.
  • Perform staff evaluations.
  • Provide effective collaboration with the client, Battelle leadership, maintenance personnel, and facility & operations teammates.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Minimum of 5 years maintenance & repair experience. Minimum of 5 years working in a lead or supervisory capacity. Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience that includes remote field experience and logistics coordination, preferably in remote, polar environments. Minimum of 2 years working with a Fleet Management Software. College degree preferred. Overland traverse experience highly desirable

Licensure(s)/Certifications/Travel Documents: PMP certification highly desirable.

Other Requirements:

  • Authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Polar Field Services cannot sponsor employment-based work visas.
  • Possession of current and valid US passport
  • Regular and predictable onsite attendance, as well as availability to work extended hours, including afterhours/weekends and on-call.
  • Ability to travel internationally for 2-4-week periods.

Work Schedule: Regular and predictable onsite attendance as well as availability to work extended hours, including afterhours/weekends and on-call.


Required Travel:

  • 1-4 trips to the Arctic annually (up to two-months travel annually)
  • 2-4 stateside trips such as conferences, vendor visits and meetings at NSF.


Work Environment/Conditions:

This position may require business travel and deployment to the field while the remaining time involves working at a desk in an office environment. The telephone and computer are the major elements of communication. Some remote/telework as needed or approved. PFS work locations in Littleton and Alaska are dog friendly.

This position also requires travel and deployment to remote field sites for work assignments.

Outdoor working conditions are challenging, and temperatures may be extreme and exceed -40F (or +100F and buggy). When at field sites, employees will sleep in tents, dorms, or other types of community housing. Food may come from restaurants, self-made or from a cook. Showers, laundry, and other typical amenities may be restricted or eliminated. Transport may include but is not limited to aircraft, trucks, and snow machines. Work may be performed high altitude.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

Please note: This position requires you to physically qualify (PQ) depending on the length/location of particular deployments. This means you must pass the National Science Foundation required physical/dental exams and drug screen prior to deployment.

  • Able to move items up to 50lbs independently and 50+ lbs. with mechanical assistance
  • Able to frequently shovel snow
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Ability to wear hard hats, steel-toes boots, and other PPE when required
