Overview

WWF NORTHERN GREAT PLAINS PROGRAM BRIDGE INTERNSHIP 2021

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organization, seeks a Black-footed Ferret Intern in summer 2021 to prepare for the reintroduction of the species on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana. Black-footed ferrets are one North America's most endangered mammals; there are fewer than 400 individuals in the wild today. They depend on the presence of prairie dogs and their burrows for food, shelter, and raising young. Key threats to the survival of both black-footed ferrets and prairie dogs are sylvatic plague, a non-native disease, and a lack of habitat.

The Northern Cheyenne Tribe is interested in establishing a population of black-footed ferrets on their lands. Prior to reintroducing the species, however, a conservation plan needs to be developed and their prairie dog habitat needs to be evaluated. WWF, in partnership with the Northern Cheyenne Natural Resources Department and Little Dog Wildlife (hereafter, team), are co-developing a black-footed ferret conservation plan with the Northern Cheyenne community. The intern will assist the team with various aspects of the planning process and habitat assessment.
