Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Associate Director, Fellowships position. The Associate Director, Fellowships is a full-time, year-round position, job group and level PT-3. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Amherst College Office of Fellowships seeks an experienced advisor for (inter)nationally distinguished fellowships to help support a diverse set of students and alumni applying to a range of awards. The associate director will expand access to awards and assist with handling internal awards that fund graduate study. We focus on students' intellectual and personal development, offering robust and interactive writing feedback meant to engender deep reflection and expressive competence. While our work is largely student-facing, it also includes collaboration with staff and faculty across campus.

Given that Amherst has taken a leadership role among highly selective liberal arts colleges and universities in successfully diversifying the racial and socio-economic profile of its student body, the ideal candidate will have a strong personal background in understanding the lived experiences of first-generation college and underrepresented students (e.g., limited-income students, students of color, undocumented students, etc.).

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Student/Alumni Advising
  • Conduct individual advising appointments with prospective and current applicants to help them assess their potential as candidates and place fellowships within the context of their lives and goals; appointments will occur both in person and virtually
  • Take primary responsibility for advising on some fellowships, the selection of which will be settled based on your academic background, expertise, interests, and needs of the office; act as liaison with faculty selection committees if these include endorsed awards
  • Effectively communicate with and support students who hold historically marginalized identities, demonstrating cultural intelligence and awareness to ensure a respectful, inclusive culture.
  • Provide intensive feedback on essays and other application materials as well as provide interview mentoring for finalists (both one-on-one and arranging panels)

Outreach and Recruiting
  • Initiate and sustain partnerships with those running programs that support underrepresented or FLI students (Mellon Mays program, STEM Incubator, Summer Bridge Institute, Meiklejohn Fellows), offering information sessions and programming
  • Raise awareness of awards and programming events through email and in-person outreach to academic departments and students as well as through regular postings on social media, working to ensure participation from a diverse set of students

Operational Support
  • Review and process internal fellowship awards including reading applications, allocating funds and processing payments through Workday, collecting and organizing materials, as needed
  • Assist director in planning end-of-semester celebration event
  • Contribute to assessment and record-keeping projects or reports as well as website updates

Professional Development
  • Stay on top of new fellowships, changes within applications, and trends in the profession; attend the National Association of Fellowship Advisors conference and workshops
  • Take advantage of opportunities to develop facility in Google and/or Microsoft collaborative tools and other software products as well as current and emerging social media platforms

  • Master's degree in any field
  • Excellent writing and written feedback skills
  • Experience advising and/or conducting outreach to students either within higher education or as part of a fellowship foundation
  • Ability to present information clearly and enthusiastically to diverse groups of students
  • Dedication to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and anti-racist program
  • Outstanding social skills with the ability to form cordial and positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative by showing leadership in areas of responsibility
  • Commitment to confidentiality
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Must be available to occasionally work evenings or weekends for programming

  • 2-5 years of experience advising on fellowships
