Development Director
The Development Director will lead the resource development efforts for Willis Dady which will include efforts with major donors, special campaigns, managing the growth of the agency endowment, securing corporate sponsors, and providing strategy and direction for planned giving and special events. The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director, the Board of Directors, donors, and a range of community stakeholders. The Development Director will supervise the agency development team and collaborate to continue the growth of the department. The Development Director will inspire a thriving culture of philanthropy, oversee and grow an established donor portfolio and build positive, energizing relationships with individuals interested in the mission and advancement of the organization. This is a full-time salaried position with a flexible schedule in order to fulfill the job duties.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Willis Dady to be healthy, nimble, and capable, with a stable financial foundation to support our current and long-term strategic activities.
- Supervise and lead the development team to achieve agency financial goals; the team currently includes our agency Development Coordinator and Grants and Communications Specialist and has been built for continued growth.
- Define expectations and desired outcomes for the development team and create a motivated, mindful and high-performance team.
- Support the Development Coordinator in monthly donation reconciliations through multiple platforms including cash and online donations.
- Assist agency Grants and Data Specialist maintain a detailed grants calendar and ensure applications and reports are submitted in a timely and complete manner.
- Lead the creation and implementation of a comprehensive development strategic annual plan including, but not limited to communications, marketing, events, annual giving, foundation and corporate grants, and major donor gifts.
- Create and report on annual plan to Executive Director and Board of Directors.
- Work in tandem with Development Coordinator and Board Development Committee to produce marketing materials, plan events, and implement best practices for non-profit development and philanthropy.
- Support and communicate with donors through day-to-day interactions and outreach and assure timely follow-through and appropriate recognition of donations.
- Implement and support donor cultivation and stewardship events to include but not limited to maintaining daily, quarterly, and annual contact with every donor of Willis Dady and support the Board of Directors through donor connections.
- Work with the Board Development Committee to plan Willis Dady’s annual Donor Appreciation Breakfast and the Phone-a-thon/Thank-a-thon.
- Expand the number of annual gifts Willis Dady receives and dollar value by 20% annually.
- Analyze gift reports and produce historical trend data to inform future strategy to include annually reporting on donor retention and donor loss rate.
- Participate in organizational budgeting and financial management processes to ensure adequate resources are dedicated to program projects.
- Maintain and grow the income of Willis Dady through increased fundraising and new revenue streams.
- Engage with staff, Board, clients, donors, and community members in order to meet annual development goals.
- Work with agency leadership to build a community narrative of opportunity and hope for people struggling with homelessness.
- Adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate empathy and perseverance; reflect optimism and a positive attitude; and convey sensitivity to donors’ needs.

- Complete required trainings and adhere to all guidelines, policies, and procedures
- Maintain ethical client relationships and confidentiality in accordance with policies
- Step in to assist with services at the Willis Dady shelter if needed (i.e. in a short-term emergency or temporary shortage)
- Undertake special projects as assigned
- Support agency volunteers and manage project specific volunteers as appropriate
Requirements
- The Development Director must be self-driven, independent, compassionate, and highly committed to the mission and vision of the agency.
- The Director must consistently demonstrate initiative and must take responsibility for making progress.
- Excellent communication, organization, interpersonal skills and time management skills are required.
Required skills and Experience:
- Five years’ experience in development in the non-profit sector including substantial experience with individual donor cultivation, marketing, and grant writing
- Bachelor’s Degree with five years of related experience, or six years of experience in a lead fundraising and/or marketing role
- Minimum two years’ experience in a supervisory position

- Strong written communication skills with the ability to appeal to many audiences through writing including writing for mass publication, grants, and donor letters
- Applicable skills in strategic planning, budgeting, and team supervision
- Track record of successful fundraising experience that includes major gift acquisition
- Ability to travel throughout Linn County, a valid driver’s license, and access to a reliable vehicle (work related travel expenses will be reimbursed by Willis Dady)
