JOB SUMMARY:
Operates radiologic equipment and performs mammography, biopsy, ultrasound and bone density procedures to assist physicians in the diagnosis of disease by performing the following duties. The technologist is a member of the direct patient care team.
This is a busy outpatient facility with many opportunities for growth.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains a high technical competency level in Breast Imaging procedures and remains current on new imaging techniques/procedures as it relates to his/her specialties.
- Adheres to Joint Commission standards, initiatives and to applicable state/federal licensure requirements and guidelines and remains current on new imaging techniques/procedures. Aligns with American College of Radiology Accreditation standards and recommendations.
- Provides accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures. Enters charges at the time service is delivered and ensures correct charges are entered for the procedure performed.
- Uses resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.
- Follows imaging and Mammography safety standards and conducts all imaging procedures accordingly. Properly utilizes patient protective gear and immobilization during diagnostic procedures.
- Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures, regularly practices aseptic techniques, and ensures compliance with infection control procedures. Complies with job, departmental and hospital safety standards, practices and policies.
- Reports “near misses” and inputs errors promptly into JUVO to improve processes and identify trends. Contributes to identification of corrective actions and improvement activities and contributes to meeting departmental and hospital targets for quality and safety.
- Ensures all imaging equipment has had QC performed as required and is in safe working order prior to use. Reports any malfunctions to management and regularly practices preventive maintenance procedures; calls for service if needed.
- Prepares and positions patient for 2D and 3D mammography procedures, biopsy procedures, breast ultrasounds and bone densities with minimal supervision.
- Assures proper review of patient medical information, independently performs high quality studies according to specified protocols for routine, diagnostic and specialty studies while providing care to and appropriately monitoring each patient.
- Modifies technical factors to achieve desired imaging results and recognizes complications / limitation.
- Performs post processing and enters data into report documentations.
- Provides direct assistance to physicians during diagnostic or special procedures, including assisting with sterile technique.
- Performs a variety of tasks, which includes imaging patients (with and without implants), performing ultrasound scans, performing dexa scans, consenting/performing patients for biopsies, and essentials for department operations (Quality assurance/improvement, screening of patients, communicating efficiently with physicians (CMR Fellows and Attending))
- Demonstrates basic knowledge of breast anatomy, and breast pathology
- Identifies proper anatomy images of the breast in order to provide physicians with proper information for interpretation
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
- Associate's degree or radiologic graduate of an accredited radiography program.
- 8 hrs. initial digital training
- 8 hrs. initial tomosynthesis training
- Knowledge of bone densitometry, breast ultrasound and breast biopsy procedures
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
- American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
- Texas Medical Board certification
- Mammography Registry through ARRT (M)
- American Heart Association BLS
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:
- Includes office, patient care units, and invasive procedure areas
- May include exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood borne pathogens and radiation
- Adherence to universal precautions is required
- Extended periods of standing and walking are required
- Able to flex hours, work other shifts and/or rotate facilities to meet needs related to unanticipated acuity; meet operational needs.
- May be exposed to such occupational hazards such as communicable diseases and/or disoriented or combative patients.
Work Schedule:
Day shift and some weekends. Hours may vary.
