Assistant Professor
The University of Washington (UW) Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) Division of Rehabilitation Care Service are offering an outstanding opportunity for an academic physiatrist with interest and/or experience in limb loss rehabilitation. Opportunities to practice general outpatient rehabilitation and perform procedures (e.g., spasticity management, electrodiagnostic) may also be available. The position will likely include a combination of outpatient and consultative care and may include using telehealth technologies to provide outpatient care to remote sites. This position also offers the incumbent opportunity for a substantial research component commensurate with experience and qualifications. Through the UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, there will be opportunities to teach PM&R residents from our strong residency program, as well as to engage with UW colleagues in other academic activities (e.g., research collaborations, Grand Rounds). All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. There also will be opportunity to work with and teach the amputation rehabilitation fellow at the VAPSHCS.
The incumbent will be Staff Physician assigned to the Division of Rehabilitation Care Service at the VAPSHCS, receiving compensation and benefits through VAPSHCS, and also will hold a faculty appointment in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington. This will be a full-time appointment with an annual service period of 12 months (July 1 - June 30), appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor (without tenure due to funding), in the clinician-scientist or clinician-educator pathway, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Anticipated start in fall 2021 or winter 2022.
The successful candidate will join our excellent team of 20 physiatrists within the Rehabilitation Care Service Line at VAPSHCS, and our faculty in the UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. The Regional Amputation Center at VAPSHCS, which includes 3 physiatrists, prosthetist/orthotists, and an amputation rehabilitation coordinator, is one of seven specialized clinical centers for limb loss rehabilitation within the VA Amputation System of Care. VAPSHCS also has a well-established amputation rehabilitation fellowship (one of the few existing in the United States). In addition to excellence in clinical care and education, VAPSHCS houses the VA Rehabilitation Research & Development Center for Limb Loss and Mobility (CLiMB), which is a nationally renowned research center with MD and Ph.D. principle investigators, VA Career Development and Research Career Scientist awardees, and approximately $30M in grant funding over the past five years.

Responsibilities:
Clinical:
- Provides a full range of PM&R-specific evaluations to diagnose and treat all general rehabilitation populations.
- Main clinical responsibilities will include amputee outpatient clinics and providing consultative amputee services for inpatients.
- Provides consultation to professional staff within VAPSHCS and community providers concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate patient treatment plans.
- Develop, implement, and document the PM&R treatment plan for an assigned caseload of patients, including prompt completion of clinical reminders.
- Functions independently as a member of the VAPSHCS medical staff, with full clinical privileges.
- Assumes complete professional responsibility for his/her clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions and documentation.
- Provides education to patients, family members and significant others.
- Complies with all CPRS (electronic medical records system) documentation procedures, including timeliness of standards for documentation and proper patient checkout procedures.
- Maintains certification and licensure in the medical specialty.
- Serves as a clinical leader in emergencies.
- Provides care that is compassionate, appropriate and effective for health problems and that promotes health.
Teaching and Training:
- Provides clinical supervision and instruction (including didactic instruction close) for PM&R Residents, as well as medical students as assigned.
- Provides clinical supervision and instruction for VA Amputee Fellow.
- May provide teaching and mentoring of graduate students and other research trainees commensurate with previous research experience and a faculty appointment at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
- Provides education to professional staff.
- Participates in educational programs, may provide presentations at local- and national-level conference and educational events.
- Participates at a local, regional or national level in subspecialty societies or patient organizations.
- Continuously seeks to develop and implement best practices in the section and Medical Center, as appropriate.
- Investigates and evaluates patient care practices, appraises and assimilates scientific evidence and improves their practice of medicine.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership in development of team process for assigned rehabilitation program and clinical teams.
- Adheres to operational policies and procedures for assigned program and VAPSHCS, while staying abreast of current VA, VISN and Medical Center policies.
- Monitors effectiveness of clinical programs through quality improvement processes and ongoing program evaluation.
- Complies with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screenings and completion of clinical reminders for all patients.
- Facilitates liaisons with other health care programs to develop ongoing relationships with stakeholders to effectively coordinate service or patient care.
- Attends and participates in administrative and informal meetings held by the service line director or designee.
- Complies with PM&R peer review procedures.
Research Responsibilities:
- Depending on the academic appointment type (clinician-scientist vs. clinician-educator), he/she may conduct research, develop a funded research program, or support ongoing amputation-related research projects.
- Manuscript preparation and presentation at national or international meetings may be required (depending on academic appointment type).
- May provide research supervision and instruction to trainees and graduate students (depending on academic appointment type).

- United States Citizenship: non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
- Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The academic appointment requires that the incumbent hold or be eligible for all licenses and certifications required to practice in the state of Washington.
- Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited course specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies are (1) those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), or (2) those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or (3) other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
- Completed residency training in an accredited Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) program leading to board eligibility or board certification by the American Board of PM&R.
- Knowledge, skill, and expertise in amputee rehabilitation.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all 3 steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
