Detailed Description:
The Grounds/Transportation Manager plans, administers, and manages all activities and personnel of the Grounds and Transportation departments. He/she has primarily responsibility for the safe and proper execution of all grounds and landscaping services, and for the overall care and appearance of the University of San Diego's approximately 180-acre campus, continue a high level of aesthetics to maintain USD's reputation as one of the most beautiful college campuses in the nation.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Supervision:
- Approves all Grounds/Fleet personnel actions including hiring, termination, and disciplinary actions.
- Approves all work assignments.
- Recommends all merit increases, promotion, and other personnel actions.
- Maintains high standards of performance and quality control.
- Maintains good working relations within the University community and adheres to all policies and procedures.
Planning and Training:
- Coordinate work with other organizations, i.e. Athletics, Housing, Dining, Special Events, academic areas, and other Facilities Management departments.
- Insures proper training for all personnel in the use of TMA, our computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and the primary means by which we assign, track, and document all work orders in Facilities Management.
- Provides input regarding specifications for new construction as it relates to Grounds and Transportation Department, i.e., effects upon area of responsibility.
- Plans and approves special projects and non-routine work.
- Approves and implements time and quality standards and training programs for departmental personnel.
- Sets Department work schedules.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Safety:
- Builds a culture of safety characterized by everyone holding themselves personally accountable for not only their own safety, but also for each other's safety. Encourages, promotes, trains, and enforces the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintains an awareness of the typical hazards of the work place as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at any University facility location such as biohazards, low-grade radiation, and chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
- Consistently follows safety practices appropriate to the grounds and landscaping trade and complies with rules and regulations established by the University and governmental agencies (local, state, and federal).
Quality Control Inspections:
- Regularly tour, monitor, and inspect overall campus grounds and landscape
- Inspect trees and shrubs and to manage weed and pest control, identify any disease or damage, etc.
- Inspect trees for potential safety hazards (damaged or low hanging limbs, etc.).
- Regularly inspect irrigation lines, valves, controls, etc. to verify systems are functioning properly and efficiently.
- Inspect hardscape areas, i.e. sidewalks, patios, and courtyards for appearance and to proactively identify potential safety hazards.
Budget Management:
- Administer budgets and maintains records, reports, and documentation.
- Administer contracted 3rd party vendor services.
- Approves all department purchase orders.
- Maintains expense and operational records.
- Approves time cards.
- Set-up guidelines for contracted services, supplies temporary labor, and all overtime expenditures to assure operation within the Grounds/Fleet Maintenance budgets.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum 5-years related job experience—including at least two years in a supervisory position—plus some combination of college courses, professional training seminars, engineering, business, or other related courses, etc. are strongly desired.
- Proficient oral and written English communication ability needed to relay information and instructions to personnel and to prepare written reports and correspondence.
- Organizational and managerial skills needed to supervise a large workforce.
- Knowledge of concrete (sidewalks) and asphalt (roads) work; knowledge and experience with tools, equipment, and vehicle maintenance.
- Knowledge of commonly used horticultural chemicals and ability to use them responsibly and safely.
- Knowledge and experience related to solid waste management, recycling, and composting.
- Experience working with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
- Maintain a valid CA driver's license and clean DMV record as may be required to occasionally operate university vehicles on- and off-campus.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Fluency in Spanish (verbal and written) is preferred.
- Associates or Bachelor's degree in Ornamental Horticulture or Landscape Architecture or related field is preferred.
- Any/all combination of QAL or QAC Pesticide Operator's License, ISA Certified Arborist, ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist, Certified Irrigation Auditor, Nursery, Landscaping, Irrigation, Greenhouse, etc. professional credentials are preferred.

$80,000K- 85,000; Excellent Benefits
