Project Manager
The UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases (IGHID) is recruiting an exceptional candidate for a project manager position within the malaria research unit. The manager will join a dynamic group of investigators in the Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Ecology Lab (IDEEL; www.ideelresearch.org) who are conducting translational research projects on a range of pathogens across sites in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The project manager will support a malaria research project in Tanzania, in collaboration with the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Program (ZAMEP) and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). The position will be primarily responsible for coordinating a project that aims to collect over 50,000 blood spot samples on Zanzibar island and mainland Tanzania to explore the contribution of imported malaria to ongoing malaria transmission on Zanzibar. Time will be split between planning and logistics at UNC and working in country with local partners to implement the two-year field study.
Duties will include: 1) procuring and shipping research supplies, 2) building a study database, 3) setting up and monitoring a flexicapture data collection system, 4) developing standard operating procedures, 5) working with local research staff to track and ensure programmatic progress, 6) overseeing shipment of samples back to UNC, 7) maintaining communication between local field teams and the various investigators, 8) setting an agenda and organizing weekly investigator meetings, 9) monitoring data quality, 10) generating study reports, and 11) preparing IRB submissions.
The position will report directly to the two UNC co-principal investigators. They will work directly in country with program managers at ZAMEP and MUHAS to ensure the highest quality of project implementation, biological sample collection and data quality. As part of this role, the project manager will routinely travel to Tanzania to work with local partners. This time will be split between Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo. International travel (airfares, ferries, etc.) and housing will be paid for by the project.
Educational requirements:
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. Master's degree in Public Health preferred.
Qualifications and experience:
Candidate should have prior experience living and working in a low-income country, preferably in sub-Saharan Africa. They should have training in public health or related fields, and preferably post-baccalaureate experience in project management or working on a clinical research study. Excellent organizational and problem solving skills are required. Experience with data management and experience leading and managing diverse personnel is preferred.
