Human Resources Manager / Generalist
Underwood Engineers, Inc., a regional leader in delivering engineering solutions for water, wastewater and civil engineering projects throughout New Hampshire and Maine, is seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager/Generalist (24 — 30 hours/week) in their Portsmouth, New Hampshire office.
Working closely with, and as a member of, the leadership team (LT), the HR Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing all of the human resources activities. Ensure that employee recruiting, selection, hiring and orientation, development, termination, and compensation and benefits programs and procedures are compliant with Labor Laws, fair to all employees, embraces diversity and inclusion, and meets UE's mission, goals & values of exceptional client service, quality solutions, and professional integrity. General responsibilities may include the following:
• Determining HR Needs — plan for specific skills and staff needed to meet company goals, conduct job analyses, and write job descriptions and specifications.
• Attracting Qualified Employees - Develop and implement Recruiting and Selection Processes —recruiting via advertising, job fairs, and other resources; determine selection processes and implement them — such as resume and application requirements, reference and background checking, performance testing, conducting interviews, developing offers to candidates. Conduct New Hire Orientation, facilitate onboarding paperwork & discussions with others involved. E-Verify new hires. Facilitate the Buddy and Engineering Boot Camp programs.
• Employee Development —Work with the LT and supervisors (LCs) to develop new, or continue existing, training programs for our staff. Coordinate, assist, or implement general and legal (such as leadership development, LC training, public speaking & presentations, or sexual harassment) training activities. Facilitate the Mentor Program, including train participants and track participation. Facilitate Performance Appraisal Process (revised in 2021), keep track of monthly appraisals & notify LT/Supervisors/payroll. Review individual appraisal documents, advise LCs, and participate in appraisal sessions as requested.
• Keeping Qualified Employees - Develop and implement compensation and benefits plans, as well as employee promotion, discipline, and separation procedures. (See employee handbook) Answer employee questions and solve problems regarding individual employee and general employment or benefits issues. Maintain the Leadership Coordinator (LCs/Supervisors) Organization chart. Prepare an Employee Skills Matrix to track training and development and career progression of employees.
• Benefits — Work with LT to develop benefit package and rewards systems that are legally compliant, equitable, and motivating. Consult with vendors, assist employees. Respond to confidential requests for FMLA and other health-related leave.
• Legal Compliance — Develop company employee handbook (completed in 2021) with labor laws and UE policies and procedures. Keep it updated to reflect changes in laws or office policies. Train management, LCs, and employees. Answer questions. Facilitate regular sexual harassment training.
• Health and Safety —Participate on the Safety Committee, update the Safety Manual, ensure that Safety Committee meetings and inspections are conducted, and that the company provides necessary PPE or other things to keep employees safe.
• Company Culture — Working with the LT, ensure that our company's culture is maintained in HR policies and procedures, the work environment, company activities, management modeling of values, and office visuals. Participate as a member of the EAPT (Employee Activities Planning Team).

REQUIREMENTS
- Ten years' experience as Human Resources generalist with management responsibilities, or general management with HR duties, of a small to medium sized professional business (AEC industry helpful). B.S. or B.A. in Business or Liberal Arts with experience. MBA and/or SHRM or HRCI certification helpful.
- Strong communication skills - verbal, writing, interpersonal, group, and presentation.
- Ability to get along with all types of people and handle interpersonal situations with tact, care, confidentiality, and confidence. Ability to share ideas and work in a collaborative environment.
- Proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Commitment to ethical and quality service.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities; ability to interpret data/information and make strategic recommendations.
- Detail oriented with organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Interest in continuing education and membership/participation in Human Resources organizations.
- Ability to work beyond office hours periodically to participate in career fair/promotional activities that may require after regular hours participation.
- Must have a driver's license to travel between our two offices and to career fairs or HR membership activities.
