The School of Medicine Office of Research Business Development is designed to bridge the gap between private industry and venture capital technology development needs and the School of Medicine and Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC) research and commercialization expertise, as well as supporting other schools as appropriate. The Chief Business Officer (CBO), Director of Business Development (DBD), and Research Business Development Office act as a single point of contact to identify potential opportunities for contracting with the private sector through industry-sponsored research service contracts, ventures and alliances providing research expertise, research management and research facilities, etc.
The Business Development Fellow (BDF) will work to support the Director of Business Development (DBD). Job requires some travel to support the DBD and CBO, approximately 10-20% of time. This job is a limited two-year fellowship, with the possibility of a one-year additional extension depending on funding and mutual agreement.
The Office of Research Business Development reports as a key component of the SOM Dean's office. The BDF supports the DBD with all aspects of 1) building new collaborations between researchers and industry partners, 2) managing relationships with key stakeholders to enable new projects, and 3) internal analytics to determined focus/strengths areas. They will have the ability to develop an in-depth knowledge of the SOM and TNPRC research capabilities (as well as a basic knowledge of other schools) and assist the DBD in matching them to industry/investor needs in order to foster appropriate business relationships that leverage Tulane's strengths. In addition to understanding Tulane's internal research strengths, the BDF will have a working knowledge of specific industry needs and overall trends in biomedical research and commercialization.
The BDF works at the direction of the DBD as a member of the office of the Chief Business Officer and in cooperation with all internal, pertinent offices such as in-house counsel, the University Office of Research, the Office of Technology Transfer, IRB, Office of Advancement, Communications and Marketing, etc. This is a two year training position, with the potential to lead to full time employment after.
