Manufacturing Engineer
Our Manufacturing Engineer fosters an environment of continuous improvement by developing, maintaining, and improving production, process methods, and product quality in a Lean Manufacturing flow environment. This hands-on production support position requires the ability to get dirty while performing critical thinking. This is a process improvement focused position to keep the production line balanced using the established Value Stream Map as capacity increases and process improvements are implemented. Summit is a fast-growing company and increasing capacity cost effectively is our #1 priority for this position. This position also provides key technical engineering insights to the leadership team.
Essential Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Identifies and leads implementation required for meeting production capacity growth needs, including building layout changes and improvements to eliminate non-value-added production work.
- Identifies, directs, and implements product cost/quality improvement efforts to meet company goals.
- Creates, maintains, and improves manufacturing process and assembly documentation required for employee training, product consistency, and product quality. Assists in Employee Skills Training Program by designing exercises, documentation, and methods in support of the production station positions.
- Creates and maintains 3D product models (SolidWorks), 2-D drawings, and ERP (WorkWise) computer Bills of Materials (BOMs) as required.
- Project manages the design, specification development, cost justification, and sourcing for outside equipment/tooling purchases. (i.e., off the shelf, semi- custom, and fully custom)
- CADD designs simple jigs and fixtures, racking, and carts to support the assembly line, in-house fabrication, and welding of components.
- Plans, coordinates, and directs the company's preventive and predictive maintenance program.
- Creates and updates standard work instructions.
- Supports purchasing in performing supplier sourcing, audits, and their improvement initiatives.
Work Environment
This is a 50/50% office and factory work environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be frequently required to sit, stoop, stand and walk; use hands to feel or handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. There will be extended time-periods sitting at a computer and in the shop.
When in the shop, the employee occasionally will work near moving mechanical parts and machines, and occasionally be exposed to wet conditions, fumes, airborne particles, and vibration. The noise level in the factory environment is usually loud and requires ear protection.
Compensation
Base salary of $85K/year or higher commensurate with experience, generous gain share incentive, health/dental insurance, paid vacation, profit-sharing, and ESOP retirement program.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or other related field of study preferred.
- Minimum 5 years relevant work experience supporting a flow-based production line in a Lean Manufacturing flow environment.
- Experience and knowledge in Value Stream Mapping and line balancing is required.
- Demonstrable SolidWorks 3D modeling CADD skills with knowledge and experience designing assembly and weld fixtures for large parts and weldments is required.
- Experience in steel fabrication, sheet metal operations, working with aluminum extrusions, and an array of fasteners and adhesives is highly desirable.
- Demonstrable SolidWorks skills at an advanced proficiency level and Microsoft Word and Excel skills at an intermediate proficiency level.
- Experience working with Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to get to the root cause in a collaborative and positive manner.
- Hands-on experience welding, fabricating, and operating machine equipment and tools is highly desirable, with ability to fabricate what you design and/or demonstrate how to perform the operation.
- Experience developing and/or managing a preventive and predictive maintenance program.
- Experience creating and working with standard work instructions is a plus.
- Willing to challenge the status quo in a positive, solution-oriented environment.
- Bi-lingual in Spanish is a plus.
