Coordinator 2, Arborist and Integrated Pest Management Supervisor
Job Summary
The Arborist Apprentice leads a team of 1-2 groundskeepers which perform grounds maintenance jobs at assigned various SLCC campus locations in efforts to keep SLCC campus grounds safe and beautiful throughout the year including tree planting, pruning and removal, the application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, and aeration. Operates a variety of potentially dangerous, small and heavy equipment including backhoe, chipper, trailer, tractor, aerial lift, chainsaws, stump grinder, and ATV. Provides training on a variety of small and heavy equipment including chipper, trailer, chainsaws, and ATV. This is an important position to the college because all duties performed are highly visible, involve assets that if protected and maintained, appreciate in value over time, and contribute greatly to the environment and overall appeal at each campus. Assist grounds department in snow removal of parking lots and paths. This position may assist the Grounds Manager in personnel decisions, operational oversight, and other areas as needed. Directs the work, provides training, and oversight of designated full-time and part-time staff. Requires great judgement and ability to asses risk, working with elevated equipment, and securing large unpredictable overhead loads.
Requires moderate physical effort, hands on experience, and knowledge in regard to plant material identification, growth habits, monetary value, risk assessment, and best practices to perform a variety of Arborist duties including: Pruning trees, lifting limbs/stumps and bags up to 50lbs, working above your head,rigging heavy loads, aerial platform safety, watering trees, flowers, and shrubs, planting trees, chainsaw maintenance, litter removal, and general equipment maintenance
Position has a regular schedule but requires flexibility to be available to respond for snow removal and sprinkler system emergencies at any time of day. Summertime emergencies rotate through a call schedule. Employees must be available for snow removal due to inclement weather. This position is key to responding to snow removal and sprinkler system emergencies in a timely manner. Position will be required to work under various, and sometimes severe, weather conditions ranging from extreme heat and cold, to rain and snow. This position is considered an advanced skilled position or supervisory level position but will also be expected to perform all duties of groundskeeper positions as needed.
Responsible to create and maintain a Tree Inventory through a GIS platform, and be able to identify the genus and species of trees, and also identify trends that are impacting tree health. Provide direction and implementation of tree protection for contracted and in house construction projects and consult with other departments, when working around trees is necessary. Provide oversight of contracted tree work. Provide tree value assessments for damaged trees. Collaborate with outside groups to remain aware of localized issues impacting trees, and best management practices.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Felling, pruning, stump grinding, and chipping trees, creating and updating tree inventory with tree assessment to properly identify, and determine the safety and condition of trees and potential risk of hazard trees. Safe operation of chain saws, pole saws, chippers, rigging slings and devices, and other light and heavy equipment and training, leading, and supervising 1-2 full or part-time staff in safely assisting in pruning, chipper operations, chainsaw operations, equipment maintenance, and cleanup.
Supervisory responsibilities including training, oversight of employee work, making assignments, performance management, time clock approval, oversight on Sprocket orders, assisting the Grounds Manager with employee relations/performance issues, and assisting the Grounds Manager with other duties as necessary.
Maintain grounds (i.e. turf, garden areas) to include: fertilizing plant and turf areas, applying herbicides/pesticides in accordance with label requirements, calibrating spray and granular application equipment, planting trees, pruning shrubs, litter removal, and general maintenance. Formulate fertilization and treatment plans for turf grass and trees.
Provide oversight of activities and projects affecting trees. Consulting stake holders and providing direction or protection for trees. Updating tree inventory with tree assessment to properly identify and determine the safety and condition of trees and potential risk of hazard trees. Attend meetings with outside professional groups. Develop and implement long term strategy for sustaining and increasing the health of our trees. Provide recommendations and hazard assessments to Grounds Manager.
Open, complete, and close out work orders in the Sprocket system, enter time worked, and order materials. Create and update tree inventory and pruning schedule.
Removal of snow and ice on a 24 hour/ 365 day on call basis at SLCC campus locations. Areas include parking lots, sidewalks, handicap ramps, roadways. Application of ice melt in designated locations. Operation and maintenance of equipment associated with snow removal job duties.
Emergency repair work on a 24 hour 365 day on call basis at SLCC campus locations.
Equipment maintenance tasks including sharpening chainsaw, and cleaning and maintaining equipment as required.
Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in work related field
1 year Experience operating snowplow
Commercial Driver License (CDL) helpful, but not required.
GIS experience.
Membership in the Utah Community Forest Council.[HJ1]
Master Gardeners Certification.
Minimum Qualifications
Six years direct, paid, full-time work experience with at least two (2) of those years under an ISA Certified Arborist and high school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.

Bachelor’s degree plus two (2) to four (4) years full-time related experience.
ISA certification
Ability to learn and input data through GIS.
Herbicide and pesticide application licenses (required within 6 months).
Must have a valid Utah driver license to operate some equipment.
Trade off of work experience and education on a 1 year to 1 year basis.
Part time related work experience may be substituted for full time experience on a pro-rated basis.
Must have or have the ability to obtain forklift certification within six (6) months of start date.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Supervisory skills and team management skills including the ability to effectively assist in the hiring/termination process, train incoming staff on College policy, general grounds procedures, and grounds duties.
Demonstrate effective teamwork with all staff.
Requires a high degree of knowledge of tree rigging methods and techniques.
Requires knowledge of best management practices and relevant OSHA requirements, with an emphasis on workplace safety.
Knowledge of and ability to safely use potentially dangerous equipment such as a chainsaw, lift truck, stumpgrinder, and chipper.
Ability to safely operate tractors, backhoes, forklifts, snowplows, and other equipment.
Equipment maintenance skills to include the following: Chainsaw maintenance proper fueling procedures, cleaning equipment, and ensuring equipment is functioning properly.
Demonstrated proper use of hooking up, unhooking, and safe towing of trailers on low speed and regular vehicles.
Knowledge and skills in the ability to apply proper rigging techniques to maintain trees on college campuses including planting, integrated pest management, and advanced pruning techniques.
Common tree identification knowledge, and knowledge of various types of common pathogens, ability to identify signs and symptoms, and ability train others.
Ability to appropriately calculate the application rate for fertilizer and, appropriately calibrate equipment based on application rate for herbicide or fertilizer in turf, properly apply to turf, and appropriately calculate application rate for pesticide as needed to control unwanted pests such as insects, arachnids, and rodents.
Knowledge of flowers, shrubs and trees. Assist and advise other department personnel on plant choices and purchases.
Snow removal skills and ability involving motorized snow equipment and snow shovels.
Computer and data entry skills. Basic MS Office knowledge.
Ability to utilize GIS programs including Google Earth. Ability to navigate the Internet.
Knowledge of Sprocket work order system and ability to enter time worked, opening and closing work orders, completing work orders, as well as ordering materials as needed.
Ensure that subordinates complete their assigned tasks on time and according to best practice.
Ability to use the timecard system to approve time as needed.
Ability to complete all College required training courses.
Ability to complete low speed vehicle training.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
Ability to work from a ladder.
Ability to perform equipment maintenance tasks.
Receive and follow verbal/written instructions.
Ability to read and understand SDS labeling requirements.
Advanced tree identification knowledge, with the ability to transfer, and update tree identification, and condition onto an ongoing Tree Inventory.
Ability and understanding in recognizing trends within our tree inventory, and make recommendations on treatment strategies, cultural practices, and future tree selections. Develop treatment thresholds for tree health, pests, and weed suppression. Provide input on new tree varieties and planting locations.
Ability to evaluate soil samples and calculate future needs for fertilization schedule based on soil test, plant tissue samples, and other observations. Ability to assess and prioritize limb and tree removal based on the potential hazard of the situation.
Ability to provide and adjust a long-term sustainable maintenance strategy for maintaining the over 3000 trees on SLCC’s campuses.
Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
