POSITION: Manager, Strategic Communications (Exempt)
SALARY: $82,515.00 - $128,962.00 Annually
GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Port of Portland connects people and passengers with the world, drives economic growth, and improves our region's quality of life. We are looking for a strategic communications leader; someone who can ensure that the Port's work is real and relevant to the community through proactive storytelling and connections to regional culture, community, and values. The Strategic Communications Manager will create strategic, multi-faceted communications plans and strengthen the Port of Portland's reputation as a leader in the region.
This position will lead external communications (media relations, social media, and content) for PDX airport and the Port of Portland, including:
PDXNext: the Port's $2 billion construction program to make the PDX airport you love even better; and,
Shared Prosperity: the Port's commitment to building a prosperous region, where quality jobs, multi-generational wealth, and access to markets are equitable and shared.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Media relations: Develop relationships with key media and drive media relations that are prioritized, focused, proactive, integrated and consistent.
- Monitor news media and social media for national and global trends that the Port's programs and policies help support and create strategies and pitches aligned with those trends.
- Thought leadership and executive communications: Create recommendations for opportunities for the Port to take a leadership role on key issues important to the region.
- Write op-eds, talking points and speeches for executives on priority policy issues and programs.
- Strategic communications development and execution: Create proactive strategies and messaging for Port storytelling including digital newsletter, websites and social media strategies.
- Ensure content in all channels is consistent with the Port and PDX brands, fresh and timely.
- Review and evaluate effectiveness of communications efforts through key performance indicators.
- Communications team development: Manage professional development, innovation, best practices and collaboration for the communications team.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in public or media relations, communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field is preferred; or, the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience is required. Master's degree is preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years' experience in communications field such as public relations, marketing, or social media with at least three (3) years' mid-level management experience.
- Working knowledge of social media, digital content strategies and public policy issues impacting the region is preferred.
- Familiarity with laws and policies related to managing personnel.
- Advanced knowledge of strategic communications planning, message development, storytelling and proactive media relations is required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access to secure areas of the Port's facilities is required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Skilled communicator with a strong understanding of communications, long-term planning, message development, social media strategies and innovative communication tools.
- Exceptional oral and written communications skills with the ability to adapt writing to different platforms such as digital newsletter, op-eds, talking points, press releases and website content.
- Demonstrated media relations expertise and familiarity with conducting interviews in print and on-camera.
- Proven team player who possesses strong leadership skills and shows the utmost respect for others.
