Director of Risk Management
Otter Tail Corporation is seeking an experienced Director of Risk Management to join its corporate team. This role, reporting to the VP of Accounting, leads, directs, and manages the traditional risk management program for Otter Tail Corporation and its regulated utility and non-regulated manufacturing businesses. The Director of Risk Management engages with others within our corporate team and subsidiary businesses requiring strong verbal and written communication skills. Successful candidates will be self-motivated, possess strong analytical skills and be extremely deadline-oriented. The ability to be persuasive, work collaboratively, and think critically is a must.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Risk Assessment – Partner with business unit leaders to identify and evaluate material risks and to implement loss prevention programs to provide maximum protection of the organization’s assets.
• Insurance Strategy – Lead and execute the organization’s insurance strategy, including property, casualty, and liability programs.
• Captive Insurance – Manage the organization’s captive insurance program ensuring continued regulatory compliance and operational effectiveness of the captive entity, and work with external actuaries to develop loss reserves.
• Claims Management – Partner with business unit employees and carrier insurance administrators to manage the claims process for the various insurance programs to minimize the financial consequences of losses that do occur.
• Contract Review – Engage with internal legal counsel to review third-party contracts to ensure compliance with our risk management strategies and policies. Partner with project teams to support compliance with contractual risk management provisions.
• Safety – Participate in the organization’s safety program collaborating with business unit leadership to establish safety and health priorities and monitoring and evaluating outcomes. • Aviation – Lead and manage the organizations aviation function, including oversight of the aviation department, with a focus on training and safety, operational effectiveness, and cost management.
• Environmental Compliance – Monitor environmental compliance for all non-utility businesses. Oversee environmental assessments performed on properties of our non-utility businesses.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• 7 years of progressive experience relative to the position
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management or related field
• Certification in risk management (ARM, CRM, or CPCU) preferred
• Experience in utility and/or manufacturing industry preferred
