CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST/MED TECH I - LAB

Summary:
Perform proficiently a variety of chemical, microscopic, bacteriological tests and procedures, following established policies, procedures and requirements of accrediting and regulating agencies.
The incumbent in this position may be assigned to a specific work area/section, may rotate in all areas/sections of the Laboratory except full Microbiology and Blood Bank.

Education:
Must have a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited university.
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Must have and maintain a current Louisiana license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Must earn 12 contact hours (1.2 CEU) of continuing education per year for licensure with the Clinical Laboratory Personnel Committee.

Responsibilities:
The incumbent in this position may be assigned to a specific work area/section, may rotate in all areas/sections of the Laboratory except full Microbiology and Blood Bank, and rotate on all shifts, including weekends and holidays. Duties include but are not limited to:
1. Receive assignments from Laboratory Director, Clinical Manager, Supervisor or Pathologist.
2. Plan, organize, and prioritize work to accomplish maximum quantity and quality of work assignments.
3. Follow principles of asepsis and antisepsis in performing tasks.
4. Follow OSHA recommended guidelines for a safe work environment
5. Assist Accessionist with centrifuging and processing specimens.
6. Assist Accessionist with verifying orders and specimen requirements.
7. Monitor and maintain adequate supplies and reagents for specimen processing.
8. Monitor testing analyzers for optimum performance. Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot problems as needed.
9. Perform and evaluate quality control and record results. Troubleshoot quality control problems as needed.
10. Identify all specimens before testing, making sure patient name, labels and requisitions are in agreement.
11. Perform tests as required following instructions in the procedure manual.
12. Record and report test results.
13. Identify, verify and report all “critical values”.
14. Inoculate and incubate cultures.
15. Prepare and stain slides for bacteria identification.
16. Microscopic evaluation of direct wet mount preparations.
17. Process and set up positive blood cultures
18. Refer all difficult bacteria analysis and abnormal findings to the Section Supervisor, Clinical Manager, Laboratory Director or Pathologist.
19. Perform, record and report analysis on blood, body fluids and exudates.
20. Add reagents to specimens as required.
21. Perform Chemistry/Automated Chemistry procedures.
22. Note appearance, change of color, or precipitate that may cause interference with test results.
23. Make dilutions and calculate results.
24. Report any problems with chemical analysis, equipment or quality control to the Supervisor, Clinical Manager, Laboratory Director, or Pathologist.
25. Perform, record and report Complete Blood Counts.
26. Review and/or manually perform differential on white blood cells
27. Perform, record and report sedimentation rates.
28. Perform, record and report reticulocyte counts
29. Perform, record and report coagulation studies including: PT, PTT Fibrinogen, D-Dimer and bleeding times.
30. Assist Pathologist with bone marrows; make slides for pathologist review.
31. Report any unusual findings or problems with hematology or coagulation to Supervisor, Clinical Manager, Laboratory Director or Pathologist.
32. Perform, record and report routine serological tests on blood and body fluids including: Mono-test, RA Latex, Cold agglutination, Group B Strep Latex, Pregnancy test, Directigen Combo kit, RPR and HIV screen.
33. Report any Serology problems to Supervisor, Clinical Manager, Laboratory Director, or Pathologist.
34. Perform, record and report routine urinalysis including microscopic examination.
35. Prepare, examine and interpret routine stool examinations for occult blood, ova, cysts and parasites.
36. Report any Urinalysis or Parasitology problems to the Section Supervisor, Clinical Manager, Laboratory Director or Pathologist.
37. Report any unusual findings or problems with the Laboratory Information System to the LIS Information Specialist, Clinical Manager, Laboratory Director or Pathlogist.
38. Maintain all required records, reports and statistical logs and files.
39. Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, conferences, and professional affiliations.
40. Perform any duties not listed as directed by Supervisor, Clinical Manager, Laboratory Director, or Pathologist.
41. Take call for emergencies.
42. May assist in orientating new employees.
43. Must be tested for difficulty with color discrimination.
44. Follows North Oaks Health System’s Compliance Programs and Federal and State Regulatory guidelines.
45. Perform all duties in a safe manner and follow North Oaks Health System’s safety policies and procedures.
