Real Estate Reporter
The Miami Herald seeks an aggressive journalist to cover the rapidly changing world of real estate, a reporter who will break exclusive stories and deliver incisive enterprise that informs and engages our audiences.
Real estate is a key economic engine in this region, as it has been since the time America’s Riviera rose from the swamp some 100-plus years ago.
These days, covering real estate ranges topically from celebrity and tech funder luxury buys to deep dives into affordable housing, the push to expand development in the western wetlands and the impact of sea-level rise on high rises along our coast.
Doing this job well means moving fast on breaking news while producing pieces that capture trends in the South Florida region that matter both to average residents and real estate professionals. It’s a beat with plenty of competitors, from pure digital plays like Real Deal to business publications like the South Florida Business Journal and the Daily Business Review and the Wall Street Journal.
This is a full-time position that includes occasional work on weekends and holidays. The person in this role will create daily stories, videos, and enterprise for miamiherald.com and miami.com and engage with audiences through all of our social media channels.
The ideal candidate is an idea generator with a history of dominating a competitive beat, breaking news and writing authoritatively. The candidate should be a passionate storyteller, be fascinated by the evolving real estate world and have a feel for telling real estate stories in a way that resonates with readers.
The candidate should have strong multi-media and social media skills, able to identify and include impacted people in stories. He/she should be able to work with traditional sources as well as social media and analytics to identify the stories people are talking about or will be talking about.
Knowledge of South Florida is a plus, as is the ability to speak and interview in Spanish.
In addition to traditional reporting and writing, you need to:
-
Select stories with an eye for audience engagement and traffic
-
Monitor trending topics from social media to inform editorial decisions, as well as engage with audiences on those platforms.
-
Participate in occasional live editorial forums/events
-
Manage photos, headlines, links, SEO and story packaging for publishing on MiamiHerald.com
-
Bring fresh ideas to daily content creation and social media promotion
-
Monitor competitive websites and social media in your coverage area and personal areas of interest
Desired skills and experience:
-
Three to five years of writing experience in a news organization
-
Background in business preferred, local reporting a plus
-
Data skills, including familiarity with database programs, are desired
-
A good feel for audience interest and trends
-
Fresh writing style in an engaging, conversational voice
-
Team player who works collaboratively
