Job Summary:
The Patient Care Assistant Extern (PCAE) is accountable for supporting patient care activities, under the supervision of a registered nurse, on inpatient nursing units. The PCAE works closely with the charge nurse and staff nurses to assure patient care needs are met. The PCAE performs patient care activities, as delegated, and adheres to patient safety measures. The PCAE is competent in the performance of basic patient care activities, medical terminology, communication, organizational, and computer skills. The PCAE demonstrates personal and professional effectiveness.
The externship will last a total of 10 weeks.
The PCA Externship Program begins Tuesday, June 21, 2022.
In partnership with Houston-based nonprofit Capital Idea Houston Harris Health is launching the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) Externship Program, a 10-week program enabling eligible Harris Health employees to pursue a career in direct patient care.
This opportunity will provide externs with the practical work experience, skills, and knowledge to transition to a patient care role within the Harris Health System.
Thoughout the program, externs will receive mentorship and support from Harris Health leaders and Capital Idea Case Managers while working a full-time schedule within various in-patient hospital units at Ben Taub and LBJ Hospitals at a competitive pay rate.
They will also prepare to obtain a certified nursing assistant (CNA) certification exam, externs will be qualifed for Harris Health's PCA roles.
This is a supplemental position (non-exempt, non-benefits).
Upon successful completion of the program there will be an opportunity of becoming a full-time employee.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma or GED - Preferred
Nurse Aide/Medical Assistant Program - Must be enrolled or have successfully completed a state-approved nurse aide program or a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited medical assistant training program
License & Certification:
Certified Nurse Assistant/Medical Assistant - Ability to meet all eligibility requirements to take the CNA/MA certification exam by the completion of the 10 week externship program.
Basic Life Support from a hospital-based American Heart Association (AHA) or Red Cross approved program completed by the end of the 10 week externship,

Spanish (preferred), bilingual skills (preferred)

Proficiencies:
MS Word (novice) P.C. (novice), Typing
