Organizational Development Assistant/Analyst/Specialist
We are looking for 1 or 2 people to join our team with a target start date of June 1.
About Hamai Consulting
Hamai Consulting is a small, woman-owned, minority-owned California company based in Palo Alto, CA. We help nonprofits, public agencies, and philanthropies make a bigger difference in the lives of children and families. We're on a mission to empower organizations to support children's holistic growth and well-being, from prenatal through the completion of higher education, especially for those who are most vulnerable and facing the greatest challenges. We create actionable insights through regular feedback loops that help organizational leaders to make good decisions, increasing their organization's impact, stability, and strength.
We're a small, collaborative, international group of people with a range of personal, academic, and professional backgrounds.
- Tamara Hamai, Ph.D. (President) founded Hamai Consulting and leads our strategy, vision, and outward communications.
- Ibiaso Adajames, MBA, PMP (Project Manager), manages our operations, coordinating our internal teamwork and service delivery.
- Herlim Li (Organizational Development Assistant) supports service delivery for clients.
- We also regularly work with a small group of trusted partners via contract.
Our values guide all aspects of our work. They represent our identity, our heart and soul. We value
- Social Justice: We recognize, appreciate, and seek out the authentic inclusion of all individuals with an interest in our work and the work of our clients.
- Empowerment: Our purpose is to build lasting strengths within an organization.
- Integrity: Organizations, including Hamai Consulting, should be actively honest with everything they do.
- Adaptability: To be effective, programs must be designed to be responsive to the needs of the children and families they serve. Our work should be, as well.
- Connection: Our work is based in human connection. Relationships are more important than productivity or products.

We set goals and plans for achieving those goals in collaboration with each team member.
Our Ideal Candidate
This describes our ideal, and we anticipate the successful candidate will fit some but not all of the description. We encourage you to apply even if you aren't sure or if you are missing some of these characteristics or skills.
You are a motivated, proactive, independent thinker who is comfortable working remotely with a small virtual team. You take initiative to create the space and routines you need to work effectively and efficiently without a traditional office setting.
You believe in the power of data and embrace a broad definition for what counts as data. You know that details and words matter, and are intentional with how you show up and communicate with others. You are a systems thinker who critically analyzes information, and leads with opportunity and possibility rather than complaint or deficit. You question the status quo.
You have a high level of ethical integrity and remain committed to ethics and values under pressure. Hamai Consulting's values are aligned with your personal values. You have a visible personal and professional commitment to equity, and justice, focused inward (personal development) and outward (in past interactions and work with other people and organizations).
You are a lifelong learner with a growth mindset who gets excited by the chance to learn a new tool, process, software, concept, theory, etc. You demonstrate openness to change and ability to manage complexities.
You resonate with being an evaluator, a researcher, a strategic planner, a facilitator, and an organizer, but don't fit into a neat box or under a single label. You embrace curiosity and growth. You have a strong interest in bridging the gap between research/data and real-world settings.
You already have or are eager to learn knowledge and skills in:
- Evaluation and research in the social sciences
- Organizational effectiveness
- Strategic planning
- Quantitative or qualitative research design and analysis, including use of statistical packages such as R and ArcGIS
- Continuous quality improvement
- Written and verbal communication related to organizational development, data, and research
- Using software in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem
What Your First 6 Months Will Look Like
Regardless of level of past experience, adapting to a new organization and team takes time. We strive to support you with this transition and mutually accommodate our ways of doing things to incorporate your strengths and approaches with our existing systems and approaches.
Your first two days (anticipated to be June 1 and 2) will involve scheduled orientation meetings and tasks from 9:30am to 6pm PT (with an hour lunch break and other shorter breaks). You will meet the rest of the team, get oriented with our organization, and get hands-on practice with our systems and tools.
Over the next 6 months, you will collaboratively complete your work with Tamara and the rest of the team - like an apprentice - gradually becoming more independent with your role over time. You will document the processes you learn as you go, creating instructional documents and templates that will then be adopted by the entire organization. You will simultaneously be learning and building the systems with which will later guide your work. By the end of the 6 months, you will have co-created the outcomes and measures by which your performance will be measured. You will be consistently delivering high-quality work, on time. You will have transitioned from showing/apprenticing to completing your work independently.

More Details
This is a full-time, salaried position with a flexible schedule. A full-time schedule is 32 hours per week. Employees work without a set or fixed schedule, working when necessary and convenient to meet work and personal obligations. We do, however, ask that you participate in existing scheduled virtual one-on-one meetings with Tamara each Tuesday morning and virtual all-team meetings each Wednesday. Some other client meetings are already scheduled for our ongoing projects, and we ask that you arrange to participate in them at their scheduled times. All other meetings will be scheduled with your input.
This position is a remote role with occasional meetings at the Hamai Consulting office in Palo Alto, CA (ideally in person approximately once a month, but this is negotiable) and occasional travel. You will be working from your own personal home office or other location of your choice. Hamai Consulting will financially help you to set up your home office and will provide the software you need to complete your work.
We start everyone at the same level of compensation rather than providing market-based compensation. As all staff are critical to our organization's success, all staff start with same annual salary rate ($110,510 per year for full-time, based on the MIT living wage for 1 adult and 1 child in Santa Clara County), regardless of position or level of experience or expertise. We do not negotiate starting salary. We give everyone a raise of at least 10% each year, with everyone receiving raises at the same time.
Hamai Consulting is closed for the following (paid) holidays:
- Martin Luther King Jr.'s Day (3rd Monday of January)
- Cesar Chavez Day (March 31st)

- Indigenous People's Day (2nd Monday of October)
- Election Day (1st Tuesday of November)
- November holiday (4th Thursday and Friday of November)

In addition to these paid holidays, you will receive unlimited paid personal time off, subject to you still completing your work on time. Personal time off includes all time off, including sick time, vacation time, holidays, and other personal reasons. This policy is designed to allow employees to take time off whenever they want, for whatever amount of time they want, and as often as they would like. This time off is usually not tracked, and there is no accrual. Employees' ability to take paid time off is not a form of additional wages for services performed, but part of our promise to provide a flexible work schedule, including the employee's ability to decide when and how much time to take off.
