NEW YORK STATE STORYTELLING REPORTER
The USA TODAY Network New York State Team is seeking an upstate New York storytelling reporter who can seek out compelling storytelling opportunities within core markets and in a 150-mile radius outside the core market.
The position entails:
· Researches, reports, shoots, writes and helps create compelling video, photo and text journalism – both News of Now coverage of events with regional and USA TODAY Network-level import and smart looks at specific situations, conflicts and local places and traditions that resonate with target audiences.
· Works with the Atlantic Region’s storytelling editor and New York Team editors to deploy creative narrative and storytelling methods as appropriate. Focus on deep profiles, rich journeys, and tapping into universal human emotion through sharp, detail- and movement-oriented reporting and writing.
· Keeps up with local, regional and national news developments and trends and makes coverage choices with these in mind. Keeps in mind the needs of regional sites and the USA TODAY Network in determining whether and where to travel.
· Develops relationships with sources, citizens, members of diverse groups, experts and others in order to provide unique insight into the impact of the topic or issue on readers and communities.
· Makes it a mission to inform and engage readers through immediacy, enterprise reporting and riveting storytelling.
· Works with editors and audience analysts to shape storytelling to deliver audience benefits in a manner that takes advantage of the utility of mobile devices and their screens.
REQUIREMENTS
· Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
· At least two years of applicable experience as a reporter/writer.
· Ability to capture and edit photos, videos and audio in the field, and/or a willingness to be trained in these areas
· Social media skills required.
· Proven experience with content management systems and social media channels.
· Good time management and organizational skills.
