USA TODAY 10Best seeks a Managing Editor to develop content strategy and then to implement that strategy by recruiting, organizing, supervising, and overseeing production of content about both editor-selected and reader-voted topics, such as weekend getaways, vacations, food, restaurants, leisure activities, and travel-related gear and technology.
The ideal candidate will possess strong management-level skills that include understanding and implementing business objectives, creating and implementing a vision, engaging people, organizing and scheduling publications, meeting deadlines, and adhering to journalistic ethics.
The candidate will exhibit a passion for smart-service journalism and will have the ability to form a community of contributors by identifying and recruiting excellent writers. The successful candidate must be able to recognize appealing travel- and leisure-related stories, people, news, historical contexts, and trends.
This is a full-time (40 hours per week), remote, salaried position. Regular communication with team and partners is required. Occasional travel for team or company meetings is possible.
Responsibilities:
- Manage editorial calendar to help achieve business goals.
- Ensure content adheres to brand vision and voice standards.
- Make data-driven decisions, utilizing your knowledge of SEO as well as tools such as Parse.ly and Google Analytics.
- Manage and recruit freelance contributors who may write/edit/fact-check stories.
- Maintain an organized workflow that fosters efficient, quality editing and content scheduling.
- Assign, edit, fact-check, publish, and (occasionally) write content.
- Provide support to freelancers when they run into technical issues within our CMS.
- Maintain budget and submit freelancer estimates and invoices to accounting monthly.
- Work across the USA TODAY Network with Travel and Food stakeholders.
- Curating content to publish on other network sites.
- Plan content in collaboration with cross-functional teams, from sales, marketing, product and syndication.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Good command of AP grammar and style.
- Strong CMS skills (as you'll be working within two proprietary content management systems), in addition to knowledge of WordPress.
- Solid copy-editing and proofreading skills.
- Knowledge of media law and ethical photo sourcing.
- Passionate and knowledgeable about travel and food, with an excitement to help share memorable and unique experiences.
- Collaborates well with others and can work with remote teams.
- Knowledge of SEO.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check.
