The Detroit Free Press seeks a reporter with experience in criminal justice to cover the challenges of people who encounter the justice system in metro Detroit and Michigan as well as policing and public safety in the region. The overarching theme of this beat is centering the voices of the people who are most impacted by the criminal justice system.
Among this reporter's responsibilities: Covering the challenges returning citizens encounter to rebuild one's life outside including finding a job and finding a home -- all made more difficult during the pandemic; helping readers to understand the systemic and compounding effects that one encounter with the justice system can have on a person's life; tracking the bevy of introduced and approved legislation from local ordinances that "ban the box" for employment and to statewide expungement, their results and effectiveness.
On the policing front, this reporter will explore how police departments and other law enforcement agencies in Detroit and other Michigan communities use their authority, including whom to surveil, detain and arrest, and identify best practices and innovations that have made law enforcement more effective and equitable.
The reporter will be responsible for marshaling and interpreting data that enable residents to hold police departments and officers accountable for their actions. But this data-gathering will be a foundation for the reporter’s work, not their primary focus. Much of the reporter’s time will be spent understanding public safety concerns across metro Detroit, particularly underrepresented communities and communities of color, and exploring how police and elected officials are addressing those concerns, as well as well-documented issues including recruitment and training, discipline and surveillance. This reporter will be able to collaborate effectively with colleagues pursuing breaking news, pursuing long-term investigations, as well as short-term enterprise.
