Community and Preventive Medicine Clerkship Director and Director of Community Preceptorships Assistant or Associate Professor Rank #REQ12098
The Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University seeks scholars who are committed to supporting the learning needs of students from diverse backgrounds and to engaging communities underrepresented in higher education. Florida Atlantic University is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all who interact in our community. In building this environment, we strive to attract students, faculty and staff from a variety of cultures, backgrounds and life experiences. Florida Atlantic University embodies a culture of strategic and collaborative community engagement that results in mutual benefit to the institution and the diverse internal and external communities that it serves.
The FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine seeks a dynamic and collaborative clinical faculty member at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to serve as the Clerkship Director for the Community and Preventive Medicine Clerkship and Director of Community Preceptorships. This is a unique opportunity for an organized and innovative medical educator with strong communication skills to serve as a clinical teacher and administrator of an innovative clerkship and to oversee clinical preceptorship experiences during the preclinical years (Phase 1) of the curriculum. This faculty member will teach in the undergraduate medical education (UME) curriculum, as well as serve in other potential roles within the College.
The Community and Preventive Medicine (CPM) Clerkship is a longitudinal clerkship that spans the third year of the UME curriculum (Phase 2) and runs concurrently with clerkships in other clinical disciplines. Our medical students rotate through a series of integrated inpatient and outpatient experiences in six core disciplines, including Obstetrics/Gynecology, Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. The framework for these experiences is two six-month Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships (LICs) called Medical & Surgical Sciences (MSS) and Family & Community Health Sciences (FCHS). A primary goal for the students' clinical LIC experiences is to build continuity with patients, faculty, and healthcare teams at their assigned clinical sites. The students develop relationships with patients and clinical mentors and follow them throughout the year. In addition to these two LICs, students are placed with a longitudinal outpatient primary care preceptor as part of the Community and Preventive Medicine Clerkship. This clerkship is based on the National Family Medicine Clerkship Curriculum, and provides students with in depth continuity experience in outpatient primary care as it is practiced in community settings across our region.
An integrated didactic curriculum for each LIC is delivered primarily by the Clerkship Directors during a weekly academic half-day on the main campus at the FAU College of Medicine. These mandatory sessions are intended to provide consistent core curricular content for all students across all of the clinical sites. It also allows students to return to the medical school campus to meet with core faculty and their advisors on a consistent basis.
Early clinical experience is a key component of the UME curriculum in which first- and second-year students engage in clinical care during a longitudinal preceptorship with a community primary care physician. This preceptorship experience is embedded in the four Foundations of Medicine (FOM) courses during Phase 1 of the curriculum. The Director of Community Preceptorships provides oversight for this program in collaboration with the FOM Course Director and fosters continuity in community medicine experiences throughout the first three years of the curriculum.
This 0.6 full-time equivalent position will report to the Director of the Year 3 Curriculum, the Assistant Dean for Medical Education/Curriculum, and ultimately the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and the Department Chair. This faculty member will work in collaboration with curriculum leaders to deliver the core Family Medicine curriculum (learning objectives, assessment methods, didactic content, and required patient experiences) as well as the community preceptorship experience for first- and second-year medical students.
FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine is committed to building a culturally diverse educational environment, with a focus on diversifying the faculty.
