Job Duties and Responsibilities
Business advisor will provide confidential one-on-one business advising to clients who are thinking of starting a business or has an existing business. Advise and trains on the process of registering a business, developing a business plan and/or marketing plan, researching market and demographic information for the business, developing financial proformas to show viability of the business, employee relations, budgeting, recordkeeping, accounting, laws, regulations, and operational practices. Builds relationships with clients in order to educate and mentor in all phases of the business cycle. Performs outreach and promotes the services of the SBDC at local events as well as establishes relationships and partnerships with community lenders, economic development departments, legislators, chambers of commerce. Collaborates with peers within the NMSBDC network to provide counseling, training, and assistance for clients and partners. Prepares reports on operational activities and measurements as appropriate.

Classification Summary
Performs a variety of financial/Bus management advisement, technical assistance, and related educational services to new and existing small businesses.

Classification Standard Duties
Provides direct technical assistance to small Bus clients in the research and development of business plans, marketing plans, loan proposals and related business development requirements. Evaluates business proposals together with client financial and business status to assess viability and bankability of proposals; advises clients as appropriate. Advises clients in micro and small business management practices, methods, and techniques. Provides advice and assistance in the establishment and maintenance of business and financial records and recordkeeping systems, in compliance with all relevant business, accounting, and taxation laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards. Participates in the development, promotion, coordination, and delivery of small business management training programs and workshops. Coordinates and/or participates in efforts to build relationships with area businesses to establish and develop contract training opportunities. Administers and monitors specific educational programs, as assigned, to include budget planning and expenditure management. Participates, as assigned, as a member of community groups and organizations to promote local business and economic development within the service area. Monitors operational activities and effectiveness of results, and prepares reports as appropriate. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge

Knowledge of the characteristics and prerequisites of a successful Bus loan proposal. Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of small business operations. Knowledge of basic business accounting. Knowledge of federal and state financial and tax regulations pertaining to small businesses.
Skills

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Records maintenance skills.
Abilities

Ability to develop basic Bus plans, marketing plans, financial strategies, and business loan proposals. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.

Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Required Experience
No previous work experience required.
Equivalency Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by Human Resource Services.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience and/or knowledge of international trade scenarios, manufacturing, business ownership experience and proficiency in Spanish a plus.
Required Certification/License
Special Requirements

Must be able to travel within the SBDC service area to meet with clients and attend meetings, in-state and out-of-state to attend meetings and conference.
