Who we are and what we do:
Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA) provides leadership in patient care, education, clinical investigation, and scientific innovation and is one of the finest veterinary teaching hospitals in North America. As an extension of CUHA, the Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists' (CRES) Hospital in Elmont, NY provides state-of-the-art surgical, imaging, diagnostic, and rehabilitation services to enhance equine health. At CRES, veterinarians aspire to assimilate knowledge gained on all fronts - at the track, in the show ring, at the research bench, and in the hospital - to deliver paradigm-shifting veterinary medical care.
We are seeking a Licensed Veterinary Technician Supervisor to provide support to our team of LVT's, clinical assistants and support staff. We need someone who is extremely independent, self-motivated, has a team-based approach and mindset, and is interested in working in an innovative and challenging environment that will provide an excellent experience with equine animals in all aspects of emergency and patient care. The qualified candidate will also cross train as Receiving Technician, Surgery Technician, as well as Anesthesia and Imaging technician.
Key Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with the Practice Manager, provide guidance to the LVT's and other clinical staff, to include all aspects of supervision (hiring, training and orientation, staff scheduling, conducting annual performance reviews and addressing any performance issues in a timely manner, as well as monitoring and approving staff timecards);
- Manage admissions and discharges for CRES patients, including assisting with emergency exams.
- Monitor and assess conditions of all in-house patients in all wards (ICU and regular wards), administer prescribed medications and regularly scheduled treatments as prescribed. Run clinical pathology samples as needed.
- Responsible for organizing daily cases and maintain the flow and order of the day, acting as a liaison between the clinical and technical staff.
- Setup before, assist during, and cleanup after all emergencies including any and all surgical cases. Handle emergency and critical inpatients using sound judgment to best stabilize animals, at times, in the absence of a clinician.
- Setup before, assist during, and cleanup after endoscopy, ultrasound, imaging and other equipment needed for medical and surgical procedures.
- Responsible for supporting, planning and organizing the operations of the veterinary technicians and patient care services (i.e. LVT's, Vet Assistants, Animal Attendants, and pre-veterinary students in all areas they are assigned).
- Assist Practice Manager in identifying current needs of LVT's and support staff to maximize well-being and to aid in staff retention.
- Provide oversight and guidance in education services for the training of LVT's and other clinical support staff.
This position supports a hospital with 24/7 operations and although you will primarily be working days, you may also need to work holidays, on a rotating basis, weekends, or evening/overnight shifts due to business and staffing needs.
