Position Title: Utility Construction Worker
Position Type: Full-time; Non-Exempt

About This Opportunity:
Excellent opportunity within the Construction division of the City of Maryville Water and Sewer Department.
The Utility Construction Worker performs skilled trades work in the installation, repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines and related work as apparent or assigned.
Essential Functions:
- Installs, maintains, inspects and repairs water and sewer lines, manholes, fire hydrants, meters, meter boxes, valves, water and sewer taps, etc.
- Checks for sewer system defects using smoke testing, wet weather flow observations, and sewer flow monitors.
- Assists in the operation of the Jet-Rodder and CCTV trucks.
- Loads and transports materials and equipment to job site.
- Performs landscaping and surface restoration at job site.
- Operates trucks, tractors, back‑hoe, tapping machines and other equipment in connection with the above tasks.
- Processes and completes paperwork regarding manhole reports, overflow and sewer stops, water and sewer request forms, material sheet, etc.
- Performs emergency repairs of broken water lines, sewer stops and overflows.
- Fills out daily worksheets regarding time, materials used, amount and type of pipe installed.
- Responds to after hour emergencies.
- Attends various training classes as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of utility lines.
- General knowledge in reading engineering drawings, water and sewer plans, and system maps.
- General knowledge of the AWWA regulations for disinfection, testing, etc.
- General knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of water and sewer facilities and appurtenances.
- General knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools.
- Some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment.
- General knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to enter and work within confined spaces.
- Ability to perform manual and semiskilled labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to make arithmetic computations; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages.
- Ability to prepare and analyze written or computer data.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
- Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling, lifting, sitting, reaching with arms and hands, performing tasks involving precise hand and finger movement, hand-eye coordination and repetitive motions.
- Work requires close vision, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; visual inspection involving small defects and /or small parts.
- Vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Work is generally performed in a loud noise location, wet humid conditions (non-weather), near moving mechanical parts, environments where exposure to outdoor weather conditions, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, bloodborne pathogens, or in high, precarious places may occur.
- May be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and a self-contained breathing apparatus.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Obtain a Class A commercial driver's license valid in the State of Tennessee within 1 year of hire.
Complete Flagging and Traffic Control, Confined Space, Bucket Truck and Trench Safety training within 1 year of hire.
Complete Sewer Overflow Response Plan training within 1 year of hire.
