Upper School Ceramics Teacher

The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School seeks a teacher of Ceramics for Middle and High School students for immediate hire. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual who is able to infuse a passion for the arts within their classroom and the school community as a whole.
The CESJDS Ceramics studio has six potters wheels and one kiln. Middle school classes teach the basics of hand building and glazing techniques. High School students build upon these skills and learn wheel throwing, as well.
Responsibilities:
- Teach three high school ceramics classes and two middle school ceramics classes each quarter.
- Develop units, lessons, instructional materials, and projects while providing differentiated instruction to reach students of all abilities. Primary focus is on self-expression through skills development.
- Teach and monitor safe use of materials and equipment.
- Load kiln, create glazes, and oversee general clean up of the Ceramics Studio, including organizing and maintaining storage areas.
- Plan and prepare artwork for art displays and exhibitions designed to showcase student work in person and online.
- Performing duties to support the school wide program, these may include recess or lunch duty or other duties as assigned.
- Participating in team meetings to review curriculum and discuss student progress;
- Working collaboratively within the Upper School arts department and in collaboration with other faculty so infuse the school wide program with the arts.

Qualifications:
- The candidate must possess a BA in Art, Art Education, Education or related experience. Masters degree preferred.
- Candidates should have at least three years of successful teaching experience in collaborative working environments.
- Experience in operating and maintaining kiln and studio equipment, including the potters wheel, required.
- Ability to climb up stepladders, lift up to 50 lbs., load and unload kiln unassisted required.
- Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) required.
- Experience in differentiated instruction, project based learning, Collaborative Problem Solving, student-centered instruction and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred. Fluency with technology required.
Work Environment:
- Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the teacher is required to maintain a professional environment.
- While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in an alternative setting. Teachers are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day (contracted hours), regardless of the setting.
