The Managing Director of Development is responsible for leading the work of frontline fundraisers to develop short- and long-term plans to provide the financial support necessary to fund the Food Bank's important work. The successful candidate will also manage a portfolio to focus on cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual donors in the greater Charlottesville area.
The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is a respected, regional nonprofit providing nourishing food and hope to neighbors. Founded in 1981, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves 25 counties and eight cities in central and western Virginia, from Loudoun and Winchester in the north to the Lexington and Lynchburg areas in the south. We provide food to more than 119,000 visitors each month through a partner network of more than 200 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters as well as through nutrition programs for children, seniors, and rural neighbors. Total revenues of approximately $50 million and an operating budget of $11 million support the work of more than 60 employees in four locations, including our headquarters and main distribution center in Verona.
Key responsibilities of the Managing Director of Development position include:
• Identifies, manages, and maintains a portfolio of donors within the Thomas Jefferson (greater Charlottesville) area who are identified as leadership prospects. The portfolio will contain primarily individual donors, although some high value businesses and organizations may also appear.
• Strategically guides and manages the work of frontline fundraisers to ensure a systematic and successful approach to effectively engage, solicit, and steward donors across regions and constituent types, with an emphasis on individual giving
• Researches trends and effective philanthropic strategies and develops initiatives designed to achieve fundraising goals; determines best practices for donor acquisition and retention in four diverse areas within BRAFB's footprint; tracks and analyzes our results
• Effective supervision and management of two key frontline fundraising positions
Required job qualifications:
We seek an engaging, motivated individual to join a dynamic, collaborative, and rewarding team environment. Other requirements:
• Bachelor's degree; a master's degree is preferred
• Minimum 3-5 years progressive experience in development, including experience as a gift officer visiting donors
• Minimum 2 years' experience in a supervisory role, preferably within a fundraising environment
• Knowledge and familiarity with greater-Charlottesville area is preferred
• Ability to independently manage priorities, identify opportunities, think
strategically, and effectively communicate our mission and the experiences of our clients.
• Excellent communication skills, in writing and in person, including public speaking.
• Extensive computer experience and comfort using Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience in using a relational database/CRM; ideally, Salesforce
The Managing Director of Development role is full-time with competitive salary and benefits. The position may require occasional evening and weekend work. Must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
This position is based in Charlottesville with weekly travel to Verona (headquarters) and occasional travel to visit donors regionally.
