Part-Time Library Assistant
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette is seeking a reliable, motivated and energetic part-time library assistant to join the staff. The library is responsible for maintaining an accurate archive of news articles that appear in the paper and assisting the newsroom staff with research.
The candidate should have the ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment. The person must have exceptional attention to detail, excellent communication skills, be self-motivated and have the ability to work well with the staff when needed. This position entails working on weekends and requires candidate to exhibit initiative and strong problem solving with no supervision.
Duties include:
* Review State and NW digital editions of paper in Adobe Acrobat for accuracy of news story segmentation making sure headlines, subheads, bylines and story bodies are properly defined and in correct order. Send and error report to Archive vendors Olive or NewspaperDirect. Follow up after corrections are made to confirm accuracy.
* Convert story files to XML and text; upload files to information vendors.
* Combine advance PDF sections of the paper together using Adobe Acrobat; Save sections to daily folder for overnight crew.
* Update Smart Layers galleries, videos and ad links daily after digital editions are republished by Olive.
* Sort daily print editions of the paper for binding and archival purposes.
* Research archive requests using various archival resources: Olive or Newsbank archives, clip files, print photo archives or negative archives.
* Assist in retrieval of materials from off-site storage facilities (photos, bound books, negatives, etc.)
* Fielding calls from the public
* Other duties as assigned.
A suitable candidate should: be familiar with current events; have good communication, grammar and punctuation skills; have accurate typing skills; be comfortable working in a deadline-driven environment; have experience with Mac and PC operating systems; be able to lift up to 40 pounds to a level of 36"; be able to follow directions. Must be fully vaccinated by date of hire. Accommodations considered.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Previous library experience is a plus. This is a part-time position. EOE. Drug-free workplace.
