Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Assistant Director of Alumni and Parent Programs position. The Assistant Director of Alumni and Parent Programs is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $58,614-commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The Assistant Director works as a key member of the Alumni and Parent Programs team and is responsible for managing volunteers, communications, and events. This role works as part of a collaborative team focused on enhancing alumni programs and content in support of the Advancement Office's engagement goals and building community and creating connections among Amherst College alumni, with one another, and with the College.
The Assistant Director manages the planning and implementation of Amherst College Reunions for a portfolio of classes and develops and supports programming to strengthen alumni-student partnerships through programming and events. The Assistant Director manages the execution of a diverse array of programs including but not limited to; alumni-student programming, affinity and special interest events, and volunteer relations. In addition, they may be asked to help support or manage some event logistics for dedication events, and alumni/family events (i.e. Family Weekend, Homecoming). The Assistant Director will work in partnership with colleagues across Advancement to formulate strategies to engage Amherst's diverse student and young alumni populations and coordinate other projects as assigned. The Assistant Director will hire and supervise a representative group of student workers for Homecoming, Family Weekend, and Reunion, in collaboration with campus partners.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
Event Planning & Execution
- Plans, implements, and oversees accounts, activities, and events relating to Reunion class events.
- Manages the hiring and supervision of a representative group of student workers at Homecoming, Family Weekend, and Reunion.
- Partners with colleagues across Advancement to design and implement alumni, student, and affinity programs.
- Participates as a member of the Alumni and Parent Programs team designing and building successful, inclusive programs and events for a diverse set of constituents and training and recognition for volunteers.
- Coordinates communications strategies and manages timelines in collaboration with Advancement Communications.
- Manages relationships with campus partners and colleagues across Advancement to effectively deliver quality programming and events.
Class & Volunteer Management
- Serves as the key contact for alumni in a portfolio of classes--responding to inquiries, addressing concerns, and supporting class programming.
- Manages, recruits, trains and motivates class volunteers.
- Solicits and proofs class notes and In Memory pieces for Amherst Magazine.
- Collaborates and coordinates with colleagues across Advancement and the College including but not limited to; the Amherst Fund, planned and major gifts, and Advancement Communications, to ensure the highest level of class engagement, representation, participation, and philanthropy.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree
- 2-3 years of experience in volunteer management, event planning, and/or student services
- Strong commitment to the goals of a liberal arts education and to the importance of the college's relationship with its many diverse constituents
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Exceptional motivational, organizational, leadership, time management and interpersonal skills
- Experience in a team-oriented and customer service focused workplace
- Attention to detail
- A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a proven record of engaging stakeholders who hold diverse backgrounds
- Initiative and imagination for innovation
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and manage
- Occasional evening and weekend hours required to fulfill job responsibilities. All advancement staff are expected to support and staff key events such as, but not limited to Homecoming, Family Weekend and Reunion.
- Very occasional travel for conferences and regional programs support
Preferred:
- Higher Education and/or non-profit experience
- Experience hiring and/or managing student workers
- Training in incorporating best practices in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and/or anti-bias training into program planning and development.
