The Memory Solutions Lab (MSL) mission is to develop innovative open system architectures and solutions that transform the performance of semiconductor memory in SSDs, mobile devices and data centers. Samsung founded a new advanced research and development lab, MSL (Memory Solutions Lab), at San Jose, CA in 2012. The vision of SAL is to be the engine of technology inspiration and renovation for Samsung semiconductor. Especially, SAL is tackling a variety of challenging issues in data center, server, and software infrastructure. SAL is operated like a start-up under Samsung umbrella. We are looking for most passionate and talented engineers who can share our visions and have a journey together. As an early team member, the candidate will play an important role in shaping a new and growing organization.


The firmware research engineer will be a key technical contributor in Advanced Datacenter Solutions (ADS). He or she will join a team of experts in researching and developing innovative solutions that utilize existing and emerging technologies to add substantial value to Samsung. As an early team member, the candidate will play an important role in shaping a new and growing organization.

The team covers a broad spectrum of topics and is building an ecosystem surrounding SSD and NVRAM. You will be working with the-state-of-art technologies in the context of holistic system optimization across firmware up to database. Your initial tasks will participate in a project for large memory solution where you will have chance to understand how memory system works across hardware and software. Our performance research will enable you to develop broad and cutting-edge expertise in system software.


  • The major role of this position is to conduct key research and development activities for future memory (e.g., Flash, PCM, MRAM), SSD technologies, and its ecosystem such as operating system (file system, virtual memory, device driver), database system (relational database, no-sql database), and more (e.g., storage system).
  • The engineer is required to analyze the capabilities and performance of SSD firmware in such context, identify issues, and propose new solutions across hardware and software
  • Create key IPs, implement prototypes, publish papers, and do standardization.
  • Collaborate with universities and international teams


  • Deep knowledge of SSD F/W & Flash characteristics
  • Deep knowledge of SAS, SATA, or NVMe
  • Knowledge of computer architecture or SSD
  • MS + 5 year experience in SSD F/W or PhD in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
  • + 2 year experience in SSD F/W

  • Rich experience with PCIe device and device driver
  • Strong programming skill in C or C++
  • Knowledge of virtual memory, file system, storage system, deduplication, wear-leveling, key-value store is plus
