Whether sorting food in our warehouse, packaging healthy meals in our Charles T. Bauer Community Kitchen, gleaning produce on a farm, or providing clerical assistance in our offices, Maryland Food Bank volunteers directly impact how quickly and efficiently we are able to distribute food to those in need. Our volunteers are the heart of our organization, and we are in search of a dynamic, creative senior manager who can continue to elevate this hugely successful program.

Major Responsibilities

The Volunteer Program Senior Manager is part of MFB’s External Affairs team. This position will report to the Director of Communications and will be responsible for the following:

Volunteer Management (approximately 80% time):

  • Primarily responsible for volunteer engagement leading to recruitment, screening, and training of potential volunteers from a wide range of groups and locations, including but not limited to outreach to corporations, associations, community groups, schools, families, and online sources.
  • Apply best practices in volunteer recruitment, retention, and management, developing and redefining MFB’s volunteer policies as needed.
  • Partner with MFB’s Development team to build strategies and create new opportunities, both onsite and offsite, to deepen engagement with volunteers and donors.
  • Oversee, place, and manage the use of volunteer time based on assessment of MFB needs.
  • Help conduct orientations that inform volunteers about the mission and objectives of the volunteer program, of MFB, and the particular volunteer assignment.
  • Serve as an MFB representative during external recruitment events and promotional opportunities.
  • Deepen volunteer relationships by using fundraising channels and marketing activities to fully engage MFB volunteers.
  • Coordinate daily with warehouse and kitchen staff, as well as other colleagues on special events, to make sure volunteers have a meaningful experience. Ensure appropriate follow-up with volunteers to demonstrate appreciation, answer questions, and recruit additional volunteers.
  • Collaborate with MFB branch staff to ensure volunteer efforts on the Eastern shore and in Western Maryland are integrated, organized, and supported, as necessary.

Data Management (approximately 20% time):

  • Manage VolunteerHub, MFB’s volunteer scheduling software.
  • Ensure appropriate maintenance of volunteer records (including, but not limited to recruitment, work logs, assignments, etc.).
  • Collaborate with the Development team to create and maintain systems that link volunteer engagement activities with key fundraising metrics, resulting in the cultivation of volunteers as potential donors.
