Job Summary
The City of Salem is looking for candidates for Seasonal Parks Maintenance Workers. Seasonal appointments will not exceed six months from date of hire. This recruitment will be used to establish an eligible list for future hiring needs and will be valid for up to six months.

Parks Maintenance Workers are often the first person that parks patrons encounter when they use a City park. Parks Maintenance Workers perform a variety of tasks to ensure the safety of patrons, care for the plants such as planting, pruning and irrigation, and maintenance facilities such as playground equipment, picnic shelters, and restrooms. As a Parks Maintenance Worker, a few of your typical assignments will include:
  • Turf and ball field maintenance, such as, mowing, edging field preparation, fertilizer application, etc.;
  • Tree maintenance and support, which includes, ground work, chipper operation, operate chip truck, CDL not necessary, but preferred;
  • Irrigation support, which includes, repairing irrigation systems, replacing heads, repairing leaks, and troubleshooting systems;
  • Grounds and horticulture support, such as, planting, pruning, fertilizing, irrigation, and landscaping.
Successful applicants will be given assignments at varying times depending on area of focus, starting with early spring turf and ball field maintenance. Candidates should focus their applications so that their knowledge of the materials, methods, procedures, tools, and equipment appropriate to the maintenance and construction of parks facilities and operational area or specialty is clearly listed.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check, and physical exam.
  • High school graduate or GED. Some general maintenance, repair, grounds keeping, construction trade or other related manual labor experience is preferred.
  • Must have a Driver License and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Some positions may require an Oregon Driver License or Commercial Driving License (CDL) and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Positions that require a CDL will be eligible to receive a $3.00 per hour pay differential and will be required to pass a drug test (including marijuana).

Desired, but not required:
  • Commercial Driving License (CDL)
  • Current Spray Applicators License
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector
