TITLE: Ruth B. Merkatz Post-Doctoral Fellowship

REPORTING TO: Scientist II, Teleshova Lab

LOCATION: CBR, New York, NY

ASSIGNMENT LENGTH: 2-3 years, renewable yearly by mutual consent and availability of funds

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Center for Biomedical Research (CBR) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to investigate host-pathogen interactions in cervical/vaginal mucosa and participate in preclinical testing of multipurpose technology (MPT) products aiming to promote vaginal health and protect against bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections. The objectives of this research are to (i) establish novel epithelial, mucosal tissue culture/pathogens culture models; (ii) explore pathogen interactions and pathogen-induced responses in the mucosa, and (iii) assess safety and activity of MPT products to inform development program.

This research involves work with mucosal tissue samples, isolation of cells from tissues, mucosal explant culture models, and bacterial cultures. The work involves molecular and immunological techniques, qPCR, microscopy, multicolor flow cytometry, and Luminex/ELISA.

This position is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure, learn and engage in the fields of mucosal immunology and preclinical product testing in the Teleshova Lab. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also interact closely with researchers in other biomedical laboratories at the Population Council to advance product development.

The Population Council laboratories are located on the Rockefeller University campus, through which there is access to numerous additional state-of-the-art facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ph.D., M.D. or MD/PhD.

2. Experience in microbiology, molecular biology, virology, cell biology (immune and epithelial cells), cell and/or tissue culture, bacterial culture, and flow cytometry.

3. Highly motivated, excellent attention to detail, with the ability to work independently and within a group as needed.

4. Record of quality scientific work.

5. Demonstrated ability to monitor and maintain project timelines.

6. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

TERMS:

Fellowships include a monthly stipend (starting at $5,179.25/month, commensurate with experience) to cover cost of living expenses, health insurance and relocation assistance. Fellows will be provided with office space and use of a computer.
