Research Analyst - Remote

HSRI is a nonprofit that has been researching, evaluating, and improving the quality and capacity of public health and social services for nearly 40 years, and were looking for someone with a passion for data who wants to be part of an innovative, expanding team within our organization.

Who We Are

Were seeking a full-time Research Analyst to support a team of researchers working on public health-related research and program evaluation projects. Youll use big data to identify trends and costs in the health care field, review data for outliers and inconsistencies, contextualize information through literature searches and reference to industry standards, and help create dynamic data visualizations and reports. Interest in the health care and public health field and working with insurance claims data is essential.

This is a remote position but with the eventual option of working from our Cambridge, Massachusetts office, which is accessible by public transportation.

What Were Looking For

Were looking for an individual who enjoys working as part of a team. The ideal candidate is someone who communicates well both in person and in writing; manages work across projects with multiple timelines; develops and maintains positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, and funders; and listens and contributes to a sharing of diverse perspectives.


  • Health care claims data reporting design data visualizations to highlight trends, increase transparency, and identify disparities and cost savings in the health care field
  • Implement complex health care claim analysis to meet statewide and community level health care reporting needs
  • Conduct routine and ad hoc data quality and assurance checks for reports and dashboards

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in a business, public health, economics, or social science discipline with an emphasis in statistics and three years of professional experience in quantitative research
  • Experience analyzing commercial, Medicare and/or Medicaid mental, dental, and/or behavioral health claims
  • Intermediate to advanced SQL and SAS programming skills
  • Experience using Business Intelligence tools such as Tableau or Spotfire
  • Attention to detail and strong commitment to high-quality work
  • Analytical with strong problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to execute complex analytic tasks and convey technical issues/problems succinctly and efficiently to the rest of the team
  • Ability to work across projects with multiple timelines and clarify ambiguities as they arise
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters in a business, public health, economics, or social science discipline with an emphasis in statistics and at least one year of professional experience in quantitative research (masters degree may substitute for two years of experience listed under minimum qualifications)
  • Intermediate to advanced expertise with data visualization software such as Tableau, Spotfire, ArcGIS, Microsoft BI or another similar program


Full Time 40 hours
