Product Designer/Mechanical Engineer
Cima Network, Inc.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Cima is seeking a Mechanical Engineer or Industrial Designer to help us develop and launch a series of innovative architectural lighting systems. The role is focused on mechanical design & engineering implemented via Solidworks, yet also requires skills ranging from conceptual design to prototyping to design for manufacturing and quality control.
Cima is launching a new line of architectural lighting products and is investing in building a product development team from scratch. Cima's product lines are at the cutting-edge of fusing architectural lighting with digital lighting and signage; digital fabrication, additive manufacturing and mass-customization; sustainable and circular-economy ready solutions; and integration into modern parametrically-designed architectural systems. As such, the role has enormous opportunity for creative growth and to be at the cutting edge of innovation in lighting systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Our Product Designer will be responsible for taking our prioritized roadmap of product ideas for architectural lighting systems and bringing them from creative concept to final product -- installed at real construction sites. As such, the Product Designer will:
- Work closely with the head of Product Development, the Product Owner, and close colleagues in Innovation, Manufacturing and other functions to realize a tight quarterly pace of new product launches
- Visualize and prototype early-stage product and system concepts
- Via Solidworks, quickly develop product, component and assembly concepts and visualize these using fast techniques such as renderings, sketches, etc.
- Quickly and efficiently craft physical prototypes via a variety of digital and traditional methods, ranging from 3D printing to hand fabrication to scale models; make design concepts tangible and nicely presented for both internal and external evaluation and testing
- Oversee detailed mechanical and system engineering
- Responsible for the selection and design of all custom and stock components of the fixture, including stock and custom-developed extrusions, stock and custom-developed hardware components, material selection, LED engines, LED drivers, optics, etc.
- Oversee complete bill-of-materials and supplier selection
- Responsible for assembling the complete bill-of-materials for a product, including getting quotations for custom components, managing critical lead times, etc.
- Responsible for finding and partnering with innovative new suppliers as required
- Oversee safety certifications
- In conjunction with the Product Owner, you are responsible for managing the overall safety certifications to ensure the product meets any and all legal requirements
- You will manage fabricating required test prototypes or pilot production units and managing all documentation, bill-of-material, and labeling requirements for each product
