The Crime and Justice Institute (CJI), a division of Community Resources for Justice (CRJ), is a non-profit organization working at the local, state, and national level to improve public safety and the delivery of justice. CJI provides technical assistance, research and other services to improve outcomes in the corrections system, policing, pretrial, re-entry, community supervision, juvenile justice, and more. For example, for the past 10 years, CJI has provided technical assistance to the Justice Reinvestment Initiative, a public-private partnership of the Department of Justice and the Pew Charitable Trusts, helping more than 15 states develop and adopt policies to reduce the unnecessary use of prison, detention, and commitment and to improve recidivism reduction measures. With many staff who have worked as practitioners and researchers in criminal and juvenile justice systems across the country, our team brings decades of experience developing evidence-based, data-driven policies, managing complex processes with diverse stakeholders, and driving systems-level organizational change.



Responsibilities

Position Overview:

This position will manage complex pretrial justice projects. Policy Specialists are specialized experts who provide direct technical assistance to clients and funders, as well as providing mentoring, coaching and leadership to project teams.

The ideal candidate for this position is able to work efficiently, is well-organized and detail-oriented, and can prioritize quickly and confidently. The position requires extensive writing assignments; qualified candidates will have familiarity with current criminal justice research and exhibit excellent writing and critical thinking / analytic skills as well as comfort with an intensive editing process. Candidates must be able to work independently as well as part of multiple teams. The ability to multi-task in a fast-paced and virtually-based work environment is critical. Travel is an expected component of most of CJI's projects and will be required for this position.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and management of complex pretrial projects with local, state, tribal and/or federal agencies.
  • Develop and deliver presentations on evidence-based pretrial practices to varied audiences, including line staff, mid-managers, executives, and policy makers.
  • Work with data staff in the coordination of data collection, coding, entry, and analysis for research / evaluation projects.
  • Produce complex evaluation reports including data analysis, graphics and narratives.
  • Write journal articles and policy reports.
  • Conduct research, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and evaluation on legislation, policies, and practices related to people involved in the criminal justice system;
  • Research new funding and project opportunities, and assist in writing and compiling grant proposals.
  • Manage projects, including client relationships, timelines, work plans, billing, budgets, and project reporting requirements.
  • Help create and maintain a culture in which staff are committed to implementing evidence- based practices and policies in the field of pretrial, corrections or related disciplines to improve public safety outcomes
  • In close partnership with director and deputy directors, participate in business development activities including leading the development of relationships with potential new funders, maintaining existing relationships with current funders, generating new ideas and developing proposal concepts, leading and/or assisting in grant writing and proposal preparation.




Knowledge / Skills / Experience Required:

  • Experience in pretrial services, research, policy and/or practice.
  • Five-years' experience in criminal justice and/or juvenile justice research, policy and practice.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information.
  • Proven capacity to understand and oversee the analysis and interpretation of statistical data.
  • Highly developed writing skills.
  • Motivated and independent thinker.
  • Possess high standards regarding work quality.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of people, both in-person and virtually, in a professional and collaborative manner.
  • Ability to coordinate and respond to multiple priorities with tight deadlines.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, and work flexible hours when needed

Education:

Relevant bachelor degree required. Advanced degree preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with work experience in pretrial policy, administration, and research.
