Job Summary
The City of Salem's Police Department is hiring for an Oregon Lateral Police Officer.

The Salem Police Department is a full-service professional agency with 191 sworn positions and a full complement of support staff. The department is the 3rd largest municipal agency in the state of Oregon, and is located in the capital city of Salem, with a population of over 177,000 residents. Our agency has a full complement of special teams and units to include: SWAT, Bomb Squad, Mobile Response Team (Civil Unrest Team), Crisis Negotiations Team, DEA Task Force, Persons and Property Crime Detectives, Traffic Team, Community Action Team, Crash Reconstructionist, Computer Forensics, Behavioral Health Unit, Training Division, Peer Support Team, Civil Investigations Team, and Patrol.

The Salem Police Department is a recognized leader in our region for technology and training to better serve our community and neighboring smaller departments. We have a fleet of state-of- the-art patrol cars with the latest computer technology, camera, license plate reader systems, and weapons platforms, and the largest police facility in the state. As a Salem Police Officer, you will be issued your needed equipment to include: uniforms, weapons (handgun and rifles), boots, duty gear, iPhones, and more.

Salem is in the heart of the Willamette Valley known for its temperate climate, world renowned food, wine, and outdoor and cultural activities. Centrally located, Salem is 1 hour from the ocean beaches to the west, the Cascade Mountains to the east, and the city of Portland to the north. The Pacific Northwest is a great place to live with clean rivers and lakes, and where you can enjoy all four seasons of the year.

The City offers an excellent compensation and benefits package. As part of total compensation package, the City may consider providing qualified candidates with leave time from date of hire. Starting salary step will be based on years of qualified experience.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • High School graduate or have completed a G.E.D. and must already possess a minimum of a Basic Police Certification by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
  • Is currently, or has been within the past 12 months, employed as an Oregon police officer with a minimum of three years of full-time employment as a sworn police officer in Oregon. DPSST certification(s) must not be expired. Corrections only certification does not qualify.
  • Currently employed and certified applicants from the state of Oregon do not need to take the NTN Frontline National Test or retake the ORPAT.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Oregon class C driver's license or other state equivalent and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's standards.
  • Must be able to work periodic overtime and a variety of 24-hour rotating shifts including holidays and weekends.
  • Be at least 21 years old at date of hire.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or have the ability to become one within 18 months of hire.
  • Participate in competitive testing including physical fitness testing, reading comprehension, writing skills, written, physical/vision, hearing and psychological examinations, and be able to pass strict Police Department background investigation.
  • Must pass the pre-employment drug test (including marijuana).
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.

Additional incentives: The City of Salem offers 2%-10% premium pay for a combination of DPSST certification levels, training, and college education. Police Officers who have been with the City for 10 continuous years receive a 3% longevity increase.

There is also 5% bilingual pay incentive for language skills in Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai, Lowland Lao, Cambodian, Highland Lao (Mien), Hmong, or certification in American Sign Language. Qualified bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Career police officers with the Salem Police Department have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of specialized units or special teams. Extra duty pay is paid for SWAT (5%), Field Training Officer (5%), K-9 (5%), K-9 decoy (2.5%), Strategic Investigations Unit (5%), Community Action Team (5%), Mobile Response Team (5%), Traffic Control Unit (5%), Bomb Squad (5%), Criminal Investigations Unit (5%), and Crisis Negotiation Team (5%).
