Job Summary

Nurse Clinical Trials Manger oversees administration of department\based clinical research to include conducting research, management of day\to\day operations, design and implementation of SOPs, scheduling, interfacing with multi\users, and maintenance of supplies and equipment. The Clinical Research Manager also helps to establish orientation, education and mentoring of new Research personnel, develops and monitors operating and capital budgets related to clinical research projects, and helps to ensure departmental compliance with Institutional, State and Federal regulations and standards related to clinical research.

  1. Manages the efforts of clinical research staff including hiring, performance management, scheduling of work assignments, disciplinary action, promotions, and transfers.
  2. Direct investigator performance and adherence to protocol, and proactively addresses conduct issues and enrollment problems, as necessary.
  3. Assists with on\boarding of new employees including sequencing and executing tasks/actions involving HMRI/HMH support areas (e.g., Department Orientation, Uniforms, Telecom/IT, Equipment, Supplies, Training, HMRI Credentialing/Competency, etc.).

  1. Manages and leads the daily operations of clinical research teams.
  2. Manages study start\up activities including protocol submission to relevant committees and regulatory documents to study sponsor.
  3. Implements complex research projects, including screening and enrolling subjects, and conducting testing procedures required by study protocol (medical history interview, vital signs, collect and enter data into case report forms, reporting to study monitors), prepares presentations and schedules institutional training for physicians, nurses, and staff on research protocol.
  4. Establishes consistent productivity expectations and revises as needed. Makes recommendations to department leadership regarding staffing requirements to meet needs of the research team to achieve maximum productivity.
  5. Indentifies operational problems, issues and barriers across projects with input from investigators, research team members, and sponsors' communicate patterns and trends to department and HMRI leadership as appropriate' supports efforts to develop and implement process/system improvements.
  6. Prepares reports for department and HMRI leadership.
  7. Participates in regular department operations meetings.
  8. Participates on institutional committees and task forces as required.

  1. Monitors progress and performance of all projects including quality of services, financial viability, and compliance with federal, state, and/or other regulations and laws including guidelines of Houston Methodist Research Institute.
  2. Serves as a liaison between investigators and ancillary department, research subjects, sponsoring organizations and institutional/state/federal regulatory authorities.
  3. Monitors site visits pre\study, at study initiation, at regular intervals during the study and at study closeout.
  4. Assure proper study documentation is maintained and archived.
  5. Conduct study operational feasibility assessments and risk assessments.
  6. Assesses ongoingin training needs of the research team.

  1. Assists with clinical trial budget development, CMS Coverage Analysis, and reconciliation of research accounts' ensures that CTMS is updated by staff regularly.

  1. Directs planning and implementation of all activities required to conduct and monitor complex clinical trials and ensures that Good Clinical Practices (GCP) are followed.

Bachelor of Science degree in scientific discipline/life sciences (or relevant field) or nursing degree (BSN) required depending on the therapeutic area served. Advanced degree preferred.


Minimum 5 years of relevant research program experience required.


CCRC or CCRP required


  • Knowledge in relevant therapeutic area preferred
  • Time management skills
  • Ability to understand and implement protocols
  • Experience with computer database management
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co\workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
