World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organizations, seeks a GIS and Research Intern, Forests Forward.
Forests provide critical ecosystem services and livelihoods to millions of people and safeguarding them has never been more urgent. From timber, fuel and fibre to stabilizing our climate and water supplies, to providing habitats for more than half of the world's land-based species, the resources and services forests provide are invaluable but undervalued. Demand for land, food, energy, and wood products is putting ever-increasing pressure on our forests. In addition to deforestation, forest degradation continues to increase, which reduces the ability of forests to provide critical ecosystem services.
WWF Forests Forward is the evolution of the work we have been undertaking through the Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN) and New Generation Plantations Platform (NGP). At the heart of Forests Forward is a desire to demonstrate the full value of forests, not just for the wood they supply but for the many other benefits they provide. Through Forests Forward, businesses, communities, governments, financial institutions and civil society organizations with stakes in forests and key landscapes are coming together to act for change.
Our internship facilitates mutually meaningful engagement between the candidate and WWF, which is in accordance with WWF project needs and the educational interests and professional aspirations of the candidate. This should give not only usable collateral and materials for WWF, but also valuable work experience toward the candidate's professional development in research skills and knowledge around forest conservation.
The GIS and Research internship will support the global expert team and WWF offices around the world to implement Forests Forward's monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) framework. Specifically, this internship position will provide the candidate with opportunities to apply and advance his/her knowledge and research skills in the following topical areas:
In addition, the candidate will gain first-hand experience in working with staff members and partners from around the world, as well as mentorship from experts in the conservation filed.
The candidate is expected to perform as a valuable member of the team, delivering high quality outputs and carry out assigned resarch activities in a timely manner.
The candidate will be working closely with WWF Lead Forest R&D in the Washington, DC office and will correspond with WWF network offices for data collection and analysis purposes, as identified and assigned by the supervisor. The candidate will be required to maintain frequent communications with his/her supervisor and also attend global team calls on a regular basis. It is his/her responsibility to ensure all issues related to the project activities are brought to the attention of his/her supervisor and are promptly resolved. Lack of communications and delays in submitting required deliverables may result in early termination of the internship by WWF.

This is a remote position based in the United States
Duration
January-June 2021 (up to 6 months). The intern is expected to work full time (average 35 hours per week).
Compensation
This is a PAID internship. Hourly wages will be commensurate with the experience and knowledge of the successful candidate.
