Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications from current seniors or recent Amherst graduates for the Green Dean-Center for Sustainability position. The Green Dean-Center for Sustainability is a full-time, one-year term position. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Center for Environment Sustainability (CES) mission is to facilitate academic and applied experiences for students in service of developing knowledge across disciplines to inform environmentally sustainable decisions and action. The CES supports faculty in their efforts to integrate sustainability into the curriculum and research. By leveraging the college's sustainable operational practices, the CES creates experiential learning opportunities for students. The CES promotes institutional innovation and action in support of the college's sustainability commitment. The CES recognizes the intersections of sustainability with social justice, environmental justice and strives to foster a more equitable world through its initiatives and programming.

The Green Dean will support the Director of the Amherst College Center of Environmental Sustainability by supporting student-facing programs and promoting awareness of the CES's mission and initiatives. The Green Dean will also support the Director to create opportunities, initiatives and programs put forth by the CES for students to engage in scholarship focused on a just and sustainable future, building collaborative relationships that enhance teaching and experiential learning, communicating and engaging the community in sustainability initiatives and pushing the college forward in its efforts to transform to carbon neutrality. The Green Dean works to support a diverse group of campus constituents as they develop innovative programs and projects that ensure the College is a mindful environmental steward.

Summary of Duties and Qualifications:
Coordination and Collaboration
  • Coordinate with faculty and the Academic Resources Team to integrate sustainability initiatives into the curriculum and makes use of campus resources (College Sanctuary, Book and Plow Farm) as a living laboratory for research and teaching, including curation of data sets to monitor, study and promote campus sustainability initiatives like the Climate Action Plan.
  • Assist the Director in researching opportunities for students to engage in sustainability scholarship and develops programs.
  • Partners with the Center for Community Engagement and the College's Resource Centers to support student engagement in organizations working towards just, equitable and sustainable solutions to the connected challenges of racial and social inequality and environmental injustice.

Student engagement
  • Work to support students engaged in programs based out of CES and Office of Student Affairs to foster greater awareness of sustainable principles (e.g., Eco-Reps program in dormitories, bike share program, recycling and waste reduction programs, etc.)
  • Assist the Director in promoting campus environmental stewardship that connects with students through various methods including: presentations and demonstrations, recycling and energy competitions, dining hall table tents, articles in the Student newspaper, web page, participation in and presence at events, and use of social media.

Operations Support
  • Assist Director in updating the College's STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) survey to gauge progress towards a more sustainable campus.
  • Maintain and update the CES website as well as all social media accounts linked to the CES department.

  • Research opportunities for outside funding, grants, rebate programs, and other funding sources.
  • Collaborate with the Book & Plow Farm and ensure that it is a resource effectively used to enhance Dining Services, create awareness regarding closed-loop systems, and is integrated into curricular and co-curricular initiatives.

  • Recent graduate of Amherst College
  • Excellent time management skills and thorough attention to detail
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
Proficient in Microsoft Office, Social Media and Web site management

  • Recent graduate of Amherst College with strong interest in Environmental Studies
