POSITION SUMMARY

The Simons Foundation's Finance department is recruiting a Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) Associate within the Accounting and Reporting group. This new position will help grow the analytical function within the group and expand the team's ability to meet the foundation's growing need for internal reporting and analysis.

The FP&A Associate will develop complex models to project the financial impact of major business decisions on both income statement activity and balance sheet balances. The FP&A Associate will partner with finance managers and key Simons Foundation decision makers in evaluating key variables and drivers to build appropriate models.

The FP&A Associate will report to the Finance Manager, Budgeting and Analysis and will work in our New York, NY office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Analyze complex financial information and provide timely and accurate financial recommendations to management for decision-making purposes
  • Analyze relationships between costs and business activities to identify cost drivers and develop rates based on these drivers that can be used for modeling and forecasting
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and/or efficiencies where cost patterns exceed expected averages or norms
  • Develop a deep understanding of the sources of financially significant data available at the foundation; leverage all available data to build the most appropriate model for the intended use of a particular report.
  • Build and enhance reports and dashboards that help to analyze spending, identify areas for cost efficiencies and process improvements.
  • Produce content for monthly and quarterly financial packages, which are shared with departmental managers and senior management; respond to ad hoc requests for financial reports and analysis.
  • Build strong performance metrics, benchmarks and key performance indicators for the foundation through deeper understanding of data; this would include building meaningful performance indicators that apply across the diverse portfolio of foundation activities, with an eye to external benchmarks where possible.
  • Maintain a rolling projection model for budgeting at the cost center/expense line/account level to be used in the budget/forecast processes and scenario planning
  • Support process improvements around the budgeting cycle and the implementation of the foundation's new budgeting software
  • Provide guidance to budget holders in terms of expenses and closely work with them to control costs
  • Monitor actual performance against budget, coordinate outreach to budget managers to understand variances and obtain latest projections; report summary findings to senior management monthly/quarterly as appropriate.
  • Monitor financial performance, identify and highlight trends across key performance indicators and analyze any substantial variances to understand the underlying causes.
  • Take on any additional responsibilities or special projects as needed


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business or accounting preferred; other degrees will be considered based on level of relevant experience.
  • Progress toward CMA, CFA or CPA designation or another relevant professional certification is strongly preferred.

Experience
  • Minimum three to five years of relevant experience; at least two years specializing in nonprofit organizations, through client service or in industry, is preferred.
  • Experience with modern business intelligence and data visualization tools, such as Tableau, is required.
  • Experience with data modeling and dashboard creation is preferred.
  • Understanding of US GAAP and routine accounting functions such as the monthly close and the preparation of monthly and annual financial reports is required.
  • Familiarity with general ledger accounting systems and financial systems integrations is a plus.
