Position: Executive Policy and Legal Research Assistant

Terms of Employment: Contarct/Part-time/Non-exempt(up to 10 hours per week/May-August 2021)

Location: New York Civil Liberties Union, 125 Broad Street, NY, NY 10004 (Remote position for an extended period of time due to COVID-19)

Salary: $36.26 per hour

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The NYCLU seeks a law graduate for a 40-hour research consultancy during May-August 2021. The research consultant will engage in policy and legal research and writing to support the Executive Director and Executive Counsel on civil rights and civil liberties legal and policy advocacy, primarily, but not exclusively regarding education.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct legal, social science and policy research relevant to school governance, with particular reference to East Ramapo Central School District, and other civil rights and civil liberties issues under the supervision of the Director and Executive Counsel or their designee.

Draft and edit legal research and memos and legislative analyses as needed

Communicate by email and or telephone to provide updates on the work.

Participate in meetings as needed.

Produce a final exit memo.

QUALIFICATIONS

Exceptional oral and written communication skills;

Demonstrated experience with legal research tools and legal writing;

Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to efficiently manage multiple projects simultaneously with consistency and accuracy;

Demonstrated commitment to the NYCLU's mission and goals;

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively;

JD required (admission to the NY Bar not required for this position);
