Job Summary
The City of Salem Public Works Department is hiring! We are in search for an Environmental Compliance Technician to join the Environmental Services team. This is a technical field and office work position requiring collection and documentation of environmental samples (water, wastewater and other substances), monitoring business and industry discharge activity, identification of trends and causes in monitoring environmental conditions and water quality.

The Environmental Compliance Technician work involves assisting in implementing the Federal Clean Water Act at the local level by performing monitoring for industrial pretreatment and stormwater programs; collecting samples from commercial and industrial sites; monitoring pretreatment limits and stations; taking daily readings from a variety of flow meters and monitoring equipment; performing basic field tests including pH, turbidity and temperature; reporting pretreatment problems; maintaining accurate files; data entry of information in computerized data bases; maintaining equipment, performing preventative maintenance and calibrations; setting portable samplers and equipment in sanitary and storm lines, streams, or other field settings; using protective equipment when working with wastewater samples and around pretreatment chemicals; and other related work as required.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of sampling methods, flow monitoring equipment and testing, procedures used in obtaining and testing domestic and industrial wastewater, surface and potable water. The Environmental Compliance Technician works with equipment used in treatment, discharge and control of industrial, commercial and residential wastes; and pH and pH neutralization systems. The work involves climbing ladders, moving over rugged terrain, lifting or moving manhole lids weighing 70+ pounds using a hand hook, working outside in all types of weather and in heavy urban traffic.

What are the Environmental Compliance Technician minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Must have an Oregon class C driver's license and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Bachelor's degree in a natural science, environmental science, biology, chemistry or a related field and three years of experience in environmental regulation or research support, performing duties related to compliance or industry inspection, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skill and abilities as listed, and you can perform the essential job functions.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and extra hours as requested during processing.
  • Hazwoper certification preferred.
