Are you an experienced journalist with a passion for long-form storytelling? Do you have a record of pitching and developing timely, relevant documentary ideas, then seeing them through production from vision to screen? Are you a self-starter who can manage a production schedule, stick to deadline, professionally communicate, and write with clarity and flair?

WRAL News, a division of Capitol Broadcasting Company, seeks an intelligent, engaged and dedicated Documentary Producer to continue the work of our award-winning documentary team and help expand its digital audience. The right candidate will have a college degree, 5+ years of long-form journalism experience and a track record of creating quality productions that examine the most important issues of our time. Experience in investigative reporting with proven results is important as well. WRAL's next Documentary Producer will be an organized, self-directed, team player with a penchant for visual storytelling who easily gives and accepts feedback and works well with others.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Pitching timely documentary ideas on significant topics to station management
  • Conducting in depth investigation into complex issues
  • Identifying interview subjects and scheduling shoots with them
  • Working with veteran photojournalist on arc of project and on identifying relevant visuals
  • Planning related and interactive digital content to extend documentary reach
  • Writing documentary script, along with supplementary material
  • Discussing feedback from editors and modifying scripts as necessary
  • Working with producers on documentary marketing strategy
  • Managing work on upcoming projects while completing current one
  • Working with sales team on occasional sponsored documentary topics
  • Organizing in-house screenings and tweaking necessary changes before premiere
  • Producing 6 half-hour documentaries per year

In addition to a standard resume and list of references, applicants should submit examples of long-form stories as well as 3-5 ideas for current, topical documentaries.
