About theposition:

The Director of Accountingwill be responsible for accounting and financial reporting activities for the organization. They will monitor, supervise and evaluate all daily accounting activities as well as develop and implement accounting processes to collect, analyze, verify and report a myriad of financial information.

This is an ideal opportunity for a seasoned accounting professional looking to impact a growing, mission-driven organization by identifying effective and sustainable accounting systems and processes. A successful Director of Accounting will also act as a key thought partner to the VP of Finance, COO, and other unit leads while leading an Accounting Team to be creative, transparent, and customer service-oriented. The Director of Accounting reports directly to the VP of Finance and will oversee a three-person Accounting Team.

What you'll do:

  • Direct the day-to-day actions of JFFs accounting function and maintain the financial records of the organization
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and State and Federal regulatory requirements
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and data analyses to appropriate internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards of JFF assets
  • Oversee the management of cash collection and disbursements and ensure that policies and procedures are followed
  • Ensure timely completion of financial reports for federal, state, and private funds.
  • Ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; prepare financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants
  • Lead the annual Single audit process, liaise with external auditors and the VP Finance; prepare the year-end financial statements, footnotes, and tax reporting
  • Lead the annual 403b audit and 5500 filings as well as negotiation for Federally Approved Indirect Cost Rate Agreement with Department of Labor
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of non-profit accounting pronouncements and upcoming changes that would impact JFF financial statements
  • Manage, mentor, and provide training and direction for Accounting Team direct reports.
  • Build and steward a team culture that is adaptable, focused on continuous improvement, and that values customer service as much as compliance
  • Develop, document, maintain, and streamline accounting policies, processes, and procedures for the Accounting Team and broader Finance Department as needed
  • Help facilitate and identify efficiencies for collaboration between the Accounting and Grants Teams
  • Act as a key thought partner with others across the organization in support of the organizations financial health
  • Work with senior leadership, developing and using financial models and KPIs to assess the financial efficacy of program/department operations and the organization
  • Provide consultation and insight on cross-functional systems improvement projects with teams such as People & Culture, IT, Development, and more
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in a clear, accurate and timely manner

Who you are:

  • You have 10+ years of progressively responsible work experience managing the accounting functions, ideally with experience in a growing organization with a $10M+ budget
  • You bring demonstrated proficiency of GAAP and cost accounting as well as knowledge of best practices for nonprofit accountability; you enjoy
  • You have prior people management experience and are adept at managing others towards impact while providing effective feedback and support; you build positive, effective, collaborative cultures and teams wherever you work
  • You are adept at communicating, both verbally and in writing, with stakeholders who may have a range of knowledge about accounting and finance practices; you are energized by working collaboratively with teammates and alongside other internal teams
  • You bring comfort in leveraging Microsoft Office, including experience using Excel for data analysis and financial modeling, and have a strong knowledge of accounting systems and tools
  • You demonstrate a growth mindset and a desire to continuously improve in your work and approach; you are energized by identifying and implementing new systems or processes and are skilled in getting up to speed quickly with new technical tools
  • You are adept at managing and coordinating multiple activities in a dynamic environment where there can be ambiguity and shifting priorities; you are proactive and have a strong attention to detail which helps you meet ambitious deadlines
  • You possess high energy and passion for JFFs mission and the ability to apply JFFs corevalues to all areas of your work
  • You model inclusive leadership, working effectively with diverse staff, and building and stewarding an organizational culture that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • You are a curious and adaptive learner, with a willingness to take in new information, perspectives and data to inform your work

Candidates may also demonstrate the following preferred, but not required, qualifications:

  • You have a degree in accounting, finance, or business administration and/or a CPA
  • You bring prior experience using Great Plains
