Position Summary

Provides academic counseling and advice to ensure a successful educational experience for all medical students. This position will require aspects of faculty development as required to ensure effective student learning.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Manage daily operation of the Office of Academic Advising and Success and supervise hourly staff and students who are peer-tutors; involves recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating peer tutors and student assistants.
  • Keep current on trends in academic advising and be able to incorporate this knowledge into the CMS advising program.
  • Understand the role of academic support in building lifelong skills for students in medical school.
  • Create systems and strategies for early intervention and support for students at academic risk.
  • Coordinate with the Office Academic Learning Environment to conduct workshops and training sessions for basic science and clinical faculty development.
  • Develop and conduct teaching and learning workshops for faculty and students.
  • Monitor student progress and work with House and Faculty Advisors to ensure that the advising runs smoothly and effectively.
  • Maintain appropriate and accurate records on students who use academic support services; evaluate the effectiveness of advising and retention programs and conduct institutional research.
  • Maintain the institutional vision for excellent student retention and graduation rates.
  • Maintain an advising load and work directly with students to accomplish their educational goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience
  • Masters or Doctorate in Education and/or Psychology with at least 5 years of experience teaching or counseling medical students.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • The faculty member should have excellent communication & teaching skills and an appreciation for the depth and knowledge base required for medical students.
  • Must have a history of successful supervisory and management experience.
  • Must be able to relate effectively with students of diverse ages and backgrounds.
  • Must have the ability to work well without close supervision, meet deadlines, and handle confidential information in a professional manner.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching and advising U.S. medical students.
