Your Role: The AVP Design Director is a visual thinker, leader, and creator that directs, creates and executes innovative design solutions for a diverse range of internal clients, departments and initiatives. The AVP Design Director works collaboratively with the creative director, independently creating and expertly managing/directing creative and production staff - to ensure successful execution of brand-aligned, conceptually-strong, content-forward print and digital communications. The AVP Design Director serves as a design and brand ambassador, building relationships with internal departments, teams and NYCEDC leadership to inform, direct and guide marketing projects, ensure brand consistency and achieve project goals and objectives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Create innovative, comprehensive, content-aligned creative solutions that resonate with a wide range of industries and diverse audiences; flexibly translate and interpret brand strategy and business objectives into comprehensive design solutions and compelling visual concepts
  • Elevate and maintain the integrity and excellence of the NYCEDC brand in all communications; educate and champion the brand with internal/external audiences
  • Expertly lead teams and execute creative assignments independently, from project inception through completion - delegating, directing and executing with excellence and focus across a wide range of communications (digital, print, environmental)
  • Work in consultation with the Creative Director to manage Marketing project workflow and creative resourcing - defining and shaping project scope and schedules in alignment with external development/production requirements and schedules
  • Protect, maintain and innovate creative processes and workflows that ensure accuracy and quality across all deliverables, maintaining a steadfast attention to detail, deadlines and budgets
  • Compellingly and engagingly present creative work to NYCEDC leadership, senior staff and within the Marketing team - leading meetings, presentations and discussions in a clear, focused manner that educates, advocates, and fosters the exchange of ideas
  • Supervise and direct creative staff members (fulltime and freelance design, production and developers) on a project basis, to foster growth and collaboration
  • Actively build and shape a strong, positive creative team culture and environment, exhibiting a positive attitude that represents the team and NYCEDC favorably and professionally.
Required Skills:
  • Demonstrated excellence leading comprehensive print and digital projects/campaigns from inception to completion
  • Proven and varied design portfolio demonstrating successful creative outcomes across print and electronic communications; brand identity, environmental graphic design, business-to-business, financial/professional services client experience is a plus
  • Superior analytical, conceptual, and design abilities - your work is idea- and content-driven and is as smart as it is visually compelling
  • Excellent hands-on design and typography skills; demonstrated ability creating communications systems, templates and grids a plus
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite; proficiency in Microsoft Office programs; Sketch and After Effects proficiency a plus
  • Deep understanding of interactive experiences and web technology
  • Demonstrated experience with open source CMS platforms (Drupal8 a plus)
  • Excellent written communications and presentation skills - must have proven experience communicating design concepts and strategic thinking in a clear, focused, jargon-free, and engaging manner
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills - you are a considerate collaborator,
    a valued partner and team player
  • Proven ability and experience leading, managing, and mentoring creative staff and freelancers
  • Deep experience and thorough knowledge of print production techniques, processes, standards, and practices
  • Deep knowledge of and experience managing project workflows, schedules and resource allocation
  • Keen interest in the variety and complexity of NYCEDC's work, our city, our mission and the industries we work with and within
Qualifications:
  • Graduate or undergraduate degree in related art or design major
  • 10+ years of digital and print design experience
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating a diverse range of digital and print work
