Job-Specific Responsibilities
Situated within Harvard University Health Services (HUHS), Harvard's Counseling and Mental Health Services (CAMHS) is a counseling and mental health support service which seeks to work collaboratively with students and the university to support individuals who are experiencing some measure of distress in their lives. Harvard's undergraduate and graduate/professional students come from diverse backgrounds, races, ethnicities, national origins, sexual orientations, gender identities, and lived experiences.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist is a member of the CAMHS team of HUHS and provides clinical management of the adult population through collaborative relationships with the psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, other primary care clinicians, and the University community. The scope of the role includes evaluation of patient care needs, participation in treatment plan development, implementation of the plan through the selection of service options, and evaluation of the plan through established outcome measures. Patient care is administered through practice guidelines, which include prescriptive guidelines as developed jointly with the psychiatrists, chiefs of service, Mental Health and Nursing and as approved by the Clinical Executive Committee. Service options based on individual needs include group, brief individual, cognitive-behavioral, psychoeducation for professional and lay persons, and psychopharmacology. Specific services provided include all the aforementioned and are determined by patient need and department policy.

In accordance with both department objectives and the mission of HUHS, the Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide patient care during day-time and after-hours urgent care, pre- and post-hospitalizations, the maintenance of standards of care for in-house and community referrals, the participation of peer review, and education quality improvement activities are included.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate competency, experience, and commitment to issues of diversity in the delivery of clinical services and in outreach/programming. We are particularly interested in applicants with documented expertise in the care of marginalized persons, underrepresented communities, and individuals with a history of trauma.
  • Facilitates the clinical management of patients through the process of evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and referral to the appropriate resources
  • Coordinates out-patient visits to ensure timely access to appropriate services; this includes intake appointments and appropriate follow-up meetings
  • Identifies and monitors high risk patients and expedites an individualized crisis management plan
  • Develops and maintains mechanisms to assure continuity of care for individuals requiring acute care
  • Provides and documents patient and family education
  • Assists and participates in the development of treatment plans consistent with the policies and procedures of the Mental Health Service
  • Adheres to the Standards of Practice of the Nursing Service
  • Supervises trainees, including social work fellows, psychiatry residents, and psychology post-docs
  • Provides outreach and consults with Houses, Tutors, Proctors, and Deans' offices and other officers of the University
  • Develops and conducts training sessions
  • Psychopharmacology: Provides psychopharmacological treatment/support for patients managed by therapists and psychiatrists and prescribes psychotropic medications listed in the HUHS Formulary
  • Provides required prescribing reports
  • Supports primary care model
  • Manages clinically expected outcomes to treatment
  • Makes appropriate referrals and lab requests
  • Identifies and assesses appropriateness of care and accessibility

Typical Core Duties
  • Responsible for the evaluating the needs of patients
  • Participate in treatment plan development
  • Analyze treatment plan and results through established outcome measures
  • Optimize patient care by working with nursing staff which may include evaluating current practices, reviewing alternatives, consultations with patient care managers and providing education to staff
  • Educate patients and families on how to best manage their conditions
  • Provide psychopharmacological treatment/support for patients managed by therapists and psychiatrists and prescribes psychotropic medications
  • Document all care provided in a concise and complete manner
  • Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations

Basic Qualifications
  • Master's degree
  • Graduate of accredited nursing program
  • Minimum of 4 years' relevant work experience

Certificates and Licenses
  • Massachusetts advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) license
  • State and federal DEA certificate

Working Conditions
  • May be required to work nights and weekends
